Accompanied by his faithful accountant (Bernard Blier), a wealthy business man (Alberto Sordi) leaves for Angola to track a friend (Nino Manfredi) that has disappeared. They will discover that the friend is alive and well, far from civilisation. But that's not the point; the point is if the civilisation itself is reason enough to leave the unexpected and the wilderness and come back to the same routine.
The comedy targets the wealthy Italian arrogant provincialism brought over to the Third World, but its intent is more than satirical comedy. The richness of the screenplay and the actor's play have made it a blockbuster at the end of the 60's.

This "mondo" movie is interesting for two reasons. First, it was directed by talented Sergio Martino, even though he actually did this before his long, successful career in Italian sex comedies, gialli, and police thrillers. Second, rather than focusing on exotic third-world world cultures it focuses on America, which even after the 1969 moon landing (which provides the opening sequence) is shown to be a backward culture in many ways.

The film is about an expedition down the Orinoco and Amazon rivers in 1560 by Spanish soldiers searching for the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. Taking some followers and family along on the journey, they descend into madness and end up dying from the environment and each other.
The protagonist, Lope de Aguirre, is played by Omero Antonutti, and represents an actual historical character with quiet, understated menace. The movie is directed by the award-winning Carlos Saura (who also wrote the screenplay).
Because of a similarity in plot and characters, the movie suffers by comparison with 1972's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God", but stands on its own as a equally great version of the same journey of obsessed explorers.

Sergeant Tom Highway, a hardened, tough veteran of Korea and Vietnam returns to the United States for his last tour of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. He is assigned to training a recon unit. Conveniently, a war does arise (the invasion of Grenada in October, 1983) and successfully tests both his usefulness and the effectiveness of the new recruits.

Directed with restraint and respect for the subject matter by Donald Bellisario, the film still caused controversy. Despite the tone ans some predictability, Last Rites has fine performances by its cast and is an entertaining thriller.

There are two hunts going on here. There are the "respectable men" hunting down a defenceless young woman. And then there is director Serge Leroy hunting down the aforementioned respectables to expose the amoral logic and cold-blooded brutality underpinning their social position.
The simple story is told with great skill. The tension builds grimly as each man acquiesces to the crime that's unfolding...
