Razor 1911 (RZR) is a warez and demo group. According to the computer crime division of the United States Department of Justice, Razor 1911 is the "oldest game software piracy ring on the internet".

History

The group was originally founded as Razor 2992 by Doctor No, Insane TTM and Sector9 in Norway on October 1985 as a Commodore 64 software cracking group. Shortly after, they changed from 2992 to 1911 as a jab at other crackers who tended to overuse the number 666 - the suffix "1911" translates to 777 in hexadecimal.
Between 1987 and 1988 the group began to move away from the Commodore 64 and migrated to a new hardware platform, coding demos and cracking games for the Amiga. In the very early 1990s Razor 1911 made another transition, this time to the IBM PC, foremost as a cracking group, but still continuing to release highly regarded cracktro loaders, demos and music.
Razor was a dominant supply group on diskette from 1992 until diskettes were abandoned for CD-ROMs. Throughout the 1990s Razor faced competition from many different groups, ranging from groups such as Tristar & Red Sector inc. (TRSi), Pirates with Attitude (PWA), The Dream Team (TDT) and Fairlight (FLT) in 1994 to Prestige, Hybrid (HBD), and others in 1995. Arguably weakened by this time Razor was revitalised by new members gained from another group, Nexus, who brought with them some UK suppliers and the leaders The Speed Racer (TSR), Hot Tuna and The Gecko. Razor had a handful of other leaders throughout the 1990s, such as Zodact, The Renegade Chemist (TRC), The WiTcH KiNG, Butcher, SwiTch, Marauder, and Randall Flagg.
In 1995 diskette releases were rapidly being supplanted by CD-ROMs, and Razor 1911 moved into the CD-ripping scene. Though not the first to begin CD-ripping, Razor had a lot of success and became one of the most successful release groups throughout all of 1996. The crew that led Razor into this new chapter included members such as TSR, Pharaoh, Fatal Error, Third Son, Hot Tuna, Beowulf, Pitbull, Bunter, Manhunter, Vitas, and The Punisher. Razor dominated the ripping scene until Prestige was formed. Prestige later merged into Class (CLS), who were strong competition for Razor.
Razor once again took on a new challenge when the ISO scene was formed. Razor 1911 began to release ISOs when they became the standard of the day, led most significantly by The Punisher. He was instrumental in Razor's recovery and its solid performance in the ISO scene. Following The Punisher's retirement, Razor was led by various different people and underwent some internal problems in the form of leadership challenges. This was solved when Pitbull, an old Razor member from the 1990s, took over the leadership role. The FBI claimed him to still be the leader of Razor at the time when "Operation Buccaneer", an international anti-piracy operation which led to raids at the homes of over 60 piracy suspects worldwide in 2001, was carried out even though NFOs and scene activity at the time points out The Renegade Chemist as actual ruler of the group.

Members raided

In 2001, two members of Razor 1911 were raided as part of international anti-piracy coop Operation Buccaneer, led by the United States Customs Service.
Shane E. Pitman age 31, of Conover, North Carolina a leader of Razor 1911 who went by the pseudonym "Pitbull", was sentenced to 18 months in prison "for conspiring to violate copyright laws" as part of Operation Buccaneer.[2]
Sean Michael Breen age 38, of Richmond, California, a member of Razor 1911 since the early 1990s pleaded guilty in July 2003 to two counts of copyright infringement in violation of Title 17, United States Code, Section 506(a) and Title 18, United States Code, Section 2319, and to three counts of mail fraud in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1341. He was sentenced February 10, 2004 to 50 months in prison and three years of supervised release, for violating the criminal copyright laws, and for defrauding Cisco Systems of hundreds of thousands of dollars of hardware. Mr. Breen was also ordered to pay restitution of $690,236.91 to Cisco Systems. Mr. Breen's 50-month sentence is the longest imposed to date of the more than 40 individuals worldwide targeted by Operation Buccaneer. In a separate investigation by agents from the United States Secret Service, Mr. Breen also admitted that he had illegally used an online customer account of Cisco Systems to order hundreds of thousands of dollars of hardware by falsely posing as one of Cisco's existing customers. Mr. Breen arranged to have the hardware delivered in separate shipments via Federal Express to "Comptel Logistics," a shell company that had been created for the sole purpose of receiving the fraudulently obtained hardware. Mr. Breen and his business partner rented a storefront in Oakland to act as a business location for Comptel Logistics and to receive the hardware. After receiving the hardware, Mr. Breen sold it on the black market at a heavily discounted price.
Immediately after the raid, Razor 1911 ceased activity for a short period of time. They released Atari Revival: Warlords 3D on May 1st, 2002, 6 months after the bust [3] and continued to release games on a regular basis until June 22nd, 2004. Razor's response to Operation Buccaneer shows that the busts only affected people alleged to be active members of the group by the FBI. In reality those who were busted had been ex-members for several years. Unlike most groups, Razor 1911 was not directly affected by Operation Fastlink in 2004, as Razor were still releasing games on a regular basis during the following months.

Return

On June 22, 2006, Razor 1911 started releasing games again. They have been releasing games fairly consistently ever since, and as of 2010 are among the most prolific groups at cracking new releases.[4][5]
Shane Pitman is no longer involved with the group and has a prominent role on the Neowin.net forums, most notably as part of their moderating and news posting team.[2]

Notable or recent activity

On July 23, 1996, Razor 1911 released Quake the day after its release.[6][2] It was the first game supplied by The Punisher.[7]
On October 14, 2006, Razor 1911 released Battlefield 2142 to the scene four days before its official release.[8]
In 2007, Razor 1911 was the first group to successfully crack a Windows Vista-only game, ShadowRun, to run on Windows XP.[9] This event proved to support the widely-held belief that Microsoft was trying to release most new games for Vista only in order to boost sales of their operating system. Others made patches for Microsoft's PC game Halo 2, that Razor 1911 released before.[10]
On November 11, 2007, Razor 1911 cracked and released the European version of Crysis five days before its official store launch date.[11]
On December 7, 2008, Razor 1911 released Grand Theft Auto IV five days after its release. In the process they managed to crack the SecuRom protection. Although a fix included in the 1.0.2.0 patch impaired functionality for players using cracked versions of the game (such as the inability to finish certain storyline missions and disabled in-game computer functions), the group still managed to provide a complete workaround.
On May 28, 2009, Razor 1911 released The Sims 3, two weeks before the official release of the game. Although it did have an error, Razor 1911 released the fix for it.
On November 10, 2009, Razor 1911 was the first to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with a working crack for the PC. Although they had very little experience in cracking Steam games, they made the release playable, but only with a steam account. Hours later SKiDROW released a non-steam version of the game.
On November 20, 2009, Razor 1911 was the first again to release Left 4 Dead 2.
On January 21, 2010, Razor 1911 released Mass Effect 2, five days before the official release of the game.
On February 8, 2010, Razor 1911 released Bioshock 2, one day before the official release of the game.
On February 16, 2010, Razor 1911 released Aliens vs. Predator, 3 days before the official release of the game.
On February 23, 2010, Razor 1911 released Napoleon Total War (video game), 3 days before the official EU release of the game. The same day as the American release of the game.
On March 2, 2010, Razor 1911 released Supreme Commander 2 (video game), same day as official release of the game.
On March 11, 2010, Razor 1911 released Warhammer 40000 Dawn Of War II Chaos Rising the day after official release of the game.
On April 27, 2010, Razor 1911 released The Settlers 7, claiming to be the first to crack the new DRM by Ubisoft requiring a permanent internet connection.
On July 31, 2010, Razor 1911 released a StarCraft II proper release with a working single-player "skirmish" mode.
On September 21, 2010, Razor 1911 released the F1 2010 (video game) 4 days before the official EU release of the game. The same day as the American release of the game.

Razor 1911 is and always will be a scene legend

Razor 1911 is without doubt the most well known and one of the most well respected brands in the underground scene, period. Originally known as Razor 2992, it was created as a Norwegian demo and cracking group on the Commodore 64 computer system back in 1985. The Razor name has managed to traversed three different computer formats and survived over two decades of continuous cracking and releasing (except for a long break at around 1986 and in 2005).

Razor 1911 also has the honour of being the oldest active PC group in existence, spanning over 19 years. Razor is the only group that managed to dabbled with every media format available on the computer pirate scene including tapes, floppies, cd-rips, cd copies and ISO packages.

Razor Beer
This page tells briefly about our career through the years 1985 to 1996 on Commodore 64, Amiga and PC. I tried my best to remember all details but of course I've missed some things and I ask whoever it may concern to be indulgent with me and notify me instead of being disappointed or angry.

Norway June 9th 1998, $ector9 - founder member

In the beginning...
On a rainy evening back in October 1985 three young Norwegian guys decided to form a computer group. We were not exactly sure about what we needed the group for but we were really inspired by other big groups at the time, such as Flash Cracking Group 1941, Section 8, Electronic Cracking Association 1998, ABC 1999, Jedi 2001, 1103, Djenghis Khan, Hellmates, SCC, Dynamic Duo etc.

These three founder members are today known as Doctor No, Insane TTM and Sector9.

Playing with the Commodore C64
A good group does of course deserve a good name, and thanks to Hellmates we decided to call ourselves RAZOR 2992. (No, that's not a typo). The number was put there to separate us from eventual future jerks who would come and steal the "Razor"-label. Besides, most of the other groups used a number too - so why shouldn't we? (We actually had a group of nitwits on Commodore C64 who stole our name for a while and added "Express" behind it - ie "Razor Express". Not many remembers them today though).

It didn't take us long to realize that 2992 was a dull number. So we came up with 1911 instead. We all agreed on that it sounded much better. Many people has asked us through the years why we chose exactly 1911. The reason is that the scene on Commodore C64 was full of brainless kids who, for some odd reason, enjoyed using 666 (the number of the beast - from the Revelation) on their demos, letters, diskbags and God knows what else. We thought this was rather childish, after all what has occultism got to do in the scene anyway? So we chose 1911 because it translates to $777 (in the hexadecimal number system). 777 happens to be the opposite of 666 and so it was our small "grow-up-and-get-a-clue"-message to the immature kids in the scene. It may also be mentioned that we seem to be immortal and thus GOD-like (777). Later on we used the name "Project $777" in a demo on Amiga to slag off everyone's that we just didn't like in the scene but couldn't find a good excuse to yell at under the Razor-name. This time more people realized what was going on, but most of them thought it was quite funny so we got away with it (we always seem to).

The Real Razor The 64-period was rather short. We made a lot of demos and a few cracks and became one of the better groups here in Norway. However - we didn't come up with too many outstanding productions. A few of them are still in circulation today on those CD-Rom compilations of Commodore 64 demos. Some of them are worth taking a look at, at least as a curiosity. So after a year the group broke up for a while. One half went to TCC while the other half (Sector9 and Doctor No) went to Megaforce (later known on Amiga as Scoopex). This only lasted for about a month - we decided to join Active Cracking Crew. This is where we got in touch with the WORLD for the first time. Through ACC we got to learn how the big crackers of C64 worked, we entered telephone conferences and talked to everyone in the scene that was worth mentioning. About 6 months later we went to one of the big parties at the time. Back then parties were only for the "top elite" people. If you didn't have an invitation and couldn't legitimate yourself you could forget about even entering the place. They were actually even called "COPY-parties", and instead of boring demo competitions we voted for the best cracker of the year (I remember that this year, 1987, it was Mr.Z from Triad, a few votes ahead of Laffen from Raw Deal) and the competition was when Danish Gold (the organizers) came up with a brand new original and every group could have a go simultaneously (If I'm not mistaken FairLight did some cooperation-crack together with ACC on a James Bond game there). Sorry about the digression folks, I just get really nostalgic from time to time. Anyway, on the plane from Denmark back to Norway we decided to give rebirth to Razor on the Amiga together with two members (Lord S and Hypocrite) from the highly successful cracking group Raw Deal.

The Amiga - demos are forever!
The Real Razor The Amiga was really slow in the beginning - nothing happened. No games, no demos, no people, no nothing. But after a year with just sporadic productions from Razor we started putting out demos on a more regular basis (1988). Soon we were among the better demo groups around, and got many members from all over the world. Our demos were usually quite original - new ideas, nice graphics and really catchy music. But still something was missing. The senior members were all aware of the fact that our wish was to become a major cracking group as well as a good demo group, unlike many of the new members. As we were one of the bigger demo groups we occasionally entered phone conferences with the major cracking groups (such as Paranoimia, Accumulators, Eclipse (No, not the new PC-crew), Quartex etc). We became quite good friends with Zodact and Onyx from Accumulators and when they broke up in late 1989 we made them join us. Zodact was the main American supplier (and sysop of a major bbs: The Castle) and Onyx was their main European cracker. All of a sudden we had solved our main problem: ORIGINALS! Besides we had access to two good crackers - Lord S and Onyx.

We also got heavily into the art of phreaking, so we had plenty of ways of reaching all our contacts around the world. This was way before the masses of lamers got any idea of what was going on, so everything was fairly safe too. During the last two weeks of 1989 we had our two first world-first releases on Amiga - Pocket Rockets and Strip Poker II. (I know they were rather cheesy, but who cares today?) Now we released games on a regular basis for a few months, until we joined a cooperation with Classic on Amiga during spring 1990. This didn't last long when we found out that some of their members tried to stab us in the back (you learn from every mistake you do!). After the break with Classic we continued putting out games until April 1991 (I think it was about 50 games altogether). By the time Amiga started becoming a dull computer to crack on. You had to work like crazy to warp up disks because they all had track-protection, and you had to put out fix after fix after fix for different problems. Among these problems was the NTSC/PAL difference which made it impossible for Americans to play European games without patches and vice versa. Besides there were tons of groups competing on the same games, and usually if you released something you would be double, triple or even quadra(?)-released by other groups because no one could afford to loose on a release. The general economy was also weak, there wasn't enough people with money to keep the group running.

PC - the building of a dynasty...
Vietnam Squad Battles The solution came to us without us really realizing what was going on. A brilliant PC-cracker (Darwin) just happened to live in our neighbourhood. What could be more perfect? It made us able to do everything ourselves, without having to rely on a cracker in another part of the world as we were used to. We closed down the Amiga division (with exception of Sim, Drake, Murdock and Codex who later made the best and most famous demo ever, VOYAGE).

We restructured the group totally - the group consisted of a more or less anonymous investor, Darwin, Doctor No, Onyx, Zodact, myself, Black Spyrit (SysOp) Red Baron (Sysop EuroHQ) and Langoliar (SysOp WHQ). Together we managed to put out dozens of games on the PC (a few of the first ones was released in cooperation with Skillion(!)) and the response from the PC-scene was immense. Our little tight group quickly grew from a small, compact and efficient one to a MASSIVE release machine. We had no idea things were gonna go so fast. With the exception of a month in late 1991 where Razor was dissolved and became a part of INC we've continuously released games, trainers, docs, intros etc. ever since (There has been over 600 games and countless other productions from us since then). The rest is, as you all know by now, history!

The most recent thing that needs to be mentioned is our entrance into the world of Internet. With this www-page and a very efficient distribution of releases we are able to reach more people faster than ever before. All skillfully controlled by our highly competent internet staff. The other thing worth mentioning is our introduction into the CD-Rom scene. We sporadically released CD-Rom games under the ROM 1911 label, but didn't pay too much attention to this part of the scene until the lack of floppy games forced us to. So in October 1995 we decided to enter the CD-Rom scene and to we overtook the leading place here too despite of many people claiming that we wouldn't be able to convert such a big group. This just proves that regardless of what we focus our concentration on, we still manage to become among the very best within our genre.

Of course we've had our problems in the group, this will always happen when sooner or later when a group becomes as big as ours. Twice the group has been split into two (The first time was 1994 when Legend was born and the second time in 1995 when Eclipse appeared), and both times we've managed to recover thanks to devoted and talented people ready to do a great job for Razor 1911.

We have had hundreds of dedicated persons doing their best to keep the group on top at any time.

-$ector9- - The complete article can be found at the Razor 1911 European Page

Over the years there have been numerous articles about and interviews conducted with Razor 1911 in the various scene magazines. Below are just a select few that we thought to mention ..

    * The Naked Truth magazine had interviews with a few Razor people, specifically in issues 2, 3 and 4. In issue 4 there are two interviews. One is with Sector9, a founding member of the PC division. The other is with Pitbull, who would later get arrested as leader of the group in 2001 during Operation Buccaneer and eventually received a jail sentence of 18 months.
    * Inquisition has two interviews in separate issues. In number 1 the interview is with The Speed Racer, leader of the group during 1995-1996. And in issue 7 there is an interview with InsaneTMM one of the original Norwegian founders on the Commodore 64 back in 1985.
    * Defacto2 issue 1 has an interview from very late 1996 with The Punisher. He had just taken over the reigns from The Speed Racer.
    * Affinity 8 has an in depth feature on the retirement of The Speed Racer.
    * Reality Check Network also wrote about them on occasion, though usually in a less than flattering light.

In June of 2004 Razor pirating took a long term hiatus, before returning exactly two years later with NFL Head Coach from EA. Meanwhile the seperatated demo division can be found at their website. It has a massive collection of all things Razor 1911.
