Thrillerul AMERICANUL îl are în rolul principal pe laureatul cu Oscar George Clooney, și este regizat de Anton Corbijn (Control). Scenariul este semnat de Rowan Joffe, și este adaptarea cinematografică a romanului scris în 1990 de Martin Booth, "A Very Private Gentleman".
Jack (George Clooney) este un asasin, singuratic și mereu pe drumuri. După ce un job în Suedia se sfârșește mai dur decât trebuia, Jack se retrage în partea rurală a Italiei. Savurând liniștea unui mic orășel medieval, Jack primește o ultimă misiune - trebuie să construiască o armă pentru o persoană de contact misterioasă, belgianca Mathilde (Thekla Reuten).
Spre marea lui suprindere, Jack începe să se apropie de locuitorii orășelului. Se împrietenește cu preotul locului, părintele Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) și se lasă prins într-o relație pasională cu Clara (Violante Placido), o femeie foarte frumoasă. Ieșind astfel în lume, Jack s-ar putea să-și complice periculos de mult existența și să forțeze mâna destinului...
