John "Scottie" Ferguson is a retired San Francisco police detective who suffers from acrophobia and Madeleine is the lady who leads him to high places. A wealthy shipbuilder who is an acquaintance from college days approaches Scottie and asks him to follow his beautiful wife, Madeleine. Un fost detectiv din San Francisco este cautat de o veche cunostinta care il roaga sa ii faca o favoare: aceea de a-i urmari sotia, care pare a suferi de niste tulburari psihice. Numai ca povestea reala este mult mai complexa. Detectivul insa, nu stie nimic despre asta, ci isi face doar datoria. O datorie foarte placuta, de altfel, fiindca se indragosteste de sotia prietenului sau si ar face orice sa o ajute. Orice - in limitele omenesti...Frica de inaltime a detectivului il impiedica sa isi salveze iubita de la moarte, ceea ce ii va cauza o cadere nervoasa, bazata partial si pe sentimentul de vina care il apasa. Isi va reveni suficient cat sa-si redescopere femeia visurilor? Insa este suficient de puternic sa o piarda si a doua oara?
