Plot:
Cool and deadly NYPD detective John Shaft arrests Walter Wade, Jr. in a racially-motivated slaying. The eye witness disappears, Wade jumps bail for Switzerland, and Shaft is livid. Two years later, Wade returns to face trial, confident his father's money and influence (and racial politics) guarantee an innocent verdict. Shaft looks hard for the witness, so Wade wants someone to kill her. He turns to a ghetto drug king, Peoples Hernandez, who's willing to kill for money, use Wade as a route to rich drug customers, and shaft Shaft. Can Shaft find the witness, convince her to testify, and shepherd her through the hail of bullets that Peoples is sure to let fly?

Politisti corupti … traficanti de droguri … imoralitate… informatori …pusti de bani gata sadici, pregatiti sa ucida……
Pentru detectivul John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) este inca o noapte petrecuta in cartierele rau famate din New York, in compania criminalilor care-l doresc mort si unde exista un sistem asa zis legal care tot prospera.
Atunci cand o lichea, un pusti Walter Wade (Christian Bale) ucide un tanar de culoare, John Shaft intervine arestandu-l. Walter reuseste sa scape, fiind eliberat pe cautiune si fuge din tara. Dupa doi ani de asteptare, Shaft reuseste sa puna mana pe el cand pramatia se intorsese pe ascuns in tara. Dupa ce bogatul ,,papa" ii plateste inca odata cautiunea, Walter se intoarce in strada cu dorinta de a termina cu Shaft.
Dusmanii sai: doi politisti corupti - Jack Roselli (Dan Hedaya) si Jimmy Grovitch (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), un dominican -mare grangur al drogurilor Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright) care vrea sa se razbune pe Shaft pentru ca l-a umilit in perimetrul unde el impunea regulile.
Aliatii sai: doi prieteni apropiati- o colega Carmen (Vanessa Williams) si omul sau de incredere Rassan (Busta Rhymes).
Intre timp, Shaft trebuie sa o apere pe Diane Palmieri (Toni Collette) - ea fiind singurul martor la crima.
