Yojimbo (用心棒, Yōjinbō?) is a 1961 jidaigeki (period drama) film directed by Akira Kurosawa. It tells the story of a ronin (masterless samurai), portrayed by Toshirō Mifune, who arrives in a small town where competing crime lords make their money from gambling. The ronin convinces each crime lord to hire him as protection from the other. By careful maneuvering and the use of his sword, he brings peace, but only by encouraging both sides to wipe each other out in bloody battles. The title of the film translates as "bodyguard". The ronin calls himself Kuwabatake Sanjuro (meaning "Mulberry Field thirty-year-old" , which he seems to make up while looking at a mulberry field by the town. Thus, the film can be viewed as an early example of the "Man with No Name" concept (which previously appears in a number of novels, including Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest.[1]).

Sanjuro, a wandering samurai enters a rural town in nineteenth century Japan. After learning from the innkeeper that the town is divided between two gangsters, he plays one side off against the other. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of the wily Unosuke, the son of one of the gangsters, who owns a revolver. Unosuke has Sanjuro beaten after he reunites an abducted woman with her husband and son, then massacres his father's opponents. During the slaughter, the samurai escapes with the help of the innkeeper; but while recuperating at a nearby temple, he learns of innkeeper's abduction by Unosuke, and returns to the town to confront him.

Într-un satuc pierdut din Japonia secolului XIX ajunge cel ce se va prezenta drept Kuwabatake Sanjuro (ceea ce s-ar traduce drept „Livada de duzi de 32 de ani”), un ronin ce-si cauta onoarea unui nou daimyo. Lucru cam greu de gasit într-o Japonie în care modernizarea se debarasa repede de feudalismele samurailor. Vremurile de aur ale acestora apusesera de mult însa. Asa ca eroul nostru este dispus sa accepte si un stapân mai putin important. Satucul este dominat de doua mari familii, ce se ocupa cam de tot ceea ce este ilegal, în special de jocurile de noroc. Acesta este si motivul tensiunii crescute dintre cele doua clanuri. Înfometat si lipsit de bani, „Omul fara nume” (arhetip pe care aveau sa-l faca celebru Sergio Leone si Clint Eastwood) îsi pune sabia în slujba clanului negustorului de matase, pentru ca apoi sa treaca de partea negustorului de sake. Jocul îi reuseste pe moment, cei doi adversari începând sa se distruga reciproc, dar apoi roninul este capturat si torturat pentru „tradarea” sa, odata cu venirea lui Unosuke, fiul cel mare al unuia dintre cei doi rivali. Exponent al modernizarii salbatice, Unosuke nu se întoarce singur, ci cu un revolver, intrând la nivel simbolic în competitie directa cu samuraiul. Dar, odata început coborâsul pe panta distrugerii, cele doua clanuri nu se mai pot opri. Sanjuro evadeaza cu ajutorul hangiului, una dintre cele mai interesante figuri din film. Refuzând sa se simta obligat în vreun fel în fata oricui, mândrindu-se cu titlul de om liber, samuraiul cedeaza însa în fata propriei constiinte si porneste spre înfruntarea cu Unosuke.
