Harrison Ford joaca rolul lui James Marshall, un veteran al razboiului din Vietnam care a ajuns presedintele Statelor Unite ale Americii. In timpul unei vizite in fosta Uniune Sovietica, Marshall ii infiereaza, intr-un discurs fara precedent, pe teroristii din fostul bloc comunist, referindu-se, in special, la criminalul de razboi din Kazakhstan, Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman).
Pe ruta de intoarcere spre SUA, la bordul celui mai sigur avion din lume, Air Force One, Marshall si staff-ul sau descopera cu stupoare ca unul dintre jurnalistii care ii insoteste este nimeni altul decat Korshunov, deghizat in reporter. Alaturi de trei parteneri de-ai sai, Korshunov deturneaza avionul luandu-l ostatic pe presedinte, precum si pe sotia si fiica acestuia. Marshall trebuie sa-si pastreze stapanirea de sine, sangele rece si sa dea dovada de inteligenta pentru a dejuca planurile teroristilor.
Intre timp, la sol, vice-presedintele (Glenn Close), ministrul Apararii (Dean Stockwell) si procurorul general sunt pregatiti sa intervina cu maxima precautie pentru a salva viata presedintelui si a familiei sale.
Scenele pline de suspans de la bordul avionului, jocul de exceptie al lui Ford, Oldman si Glenn Close, efectele speciale si tensiunea psihologica au facut din acest film un mare succes de box-office in 1997.
