John Smith is an amoral gunslinger in the days of Prohibition. On the lam from his latest (unspecified) exploits, he happens upon the town of Jericho, Texas. Actually, calling Jericho a town would be too generous--it has become more like a ghost town, since two warring gangs have 'driven off all the decent folk.' Smith sees this as an opportunity to play both sides off against each other, earning himself a nice piece of change as a hired gun. Despite his strictly avowed mercenary intentions, he finds himself risking his life for his, albeit skewed, sense of honor....

Povestea originala care sta la baza acestui film a fost scrisa de Akira Kurosawa si a inspirat, de altfel, un alt film celebru – Pentru un pumn de dolari. Actiunea se petrece in orasul Jericho, la granita cu Mexicul, pe timpul prohibitiei. Desi mic si neinsemnat, orasul este scena luptelor dintre doua bande rivale de contrabandisti, una irlandeza si cealalta italiana. Dupa repetate varsari de sange, serifii au renuntat rand pe rand sa mai lupte pentru a pastra legea in oras iar majoritatea locuitorilor au fugit. Singurii ramasi fac parte din cele doua bande rivale, care ajung pana la urma la o intelegere. Pana cand in oras ajunge un strain pe nume John Smith (Bruce Willis) care va reusi sa-i invarta pe degete pe membrii ambelor bande si sa-i starneasca din nou unii impotriva altora, in propriul sau folos.
