---------------------------------- Description: ---------------------------------- War World is a third-person shooter in which the player controls a mechanized robot and battles in large arenas against other mechs. If this sounds like a pretty straightforward description, it's because the game itself is very straightforward. The player enters into a survival competition and battles until there are no more robots to smash. Enemies will come in waves, sometimes appearing from out of nowhere, more often coming out from a large drop ship (that isn't afraid to open fire on you). The best strategy is to destroy the drop ship before it has a chance to leave enemy reinforcements, which leads to a very satisfying kaboom!
Essentially an indie game, War World is developed in Europe by a number of ex-Rare employees without the financial benefit of having a major publisher to back them up. Nevertheless, the quality of this title is quite high. The graphics are very impressive, especially with the explosions and speed effects. There are 100 levels in the single player mode, and the player must be victorious in one before moving to the next. Moving to the next level means additional funds to purchase things like bigger guns, shields, and other add-ons. Although, it's not quite fair to say that there are 100 levels, since they all take place within a small handful of maps. Nor is there any kind of storyline that runs through the game. The player is simply entered into one skirmish after another. Higher mission levels simply mean that more waves of robots will be coming at you, until you can't move three feet without worrying about mortar fire. The amount of cash you have on hand is always constant, meaning it doesn't accumulate. Each level allocates a set amount of cash. So, you can't soup up your mech at level 20, then expect to replay level 3 with the firepower to level a city. Nothing changes this amount, including playing at higher difficulties, which changes the damage ratios and AI aggression. AI behavior changes appear to happen independently, so it's not like they'll ever coordinate with each other and try to outflank you. They will stand together in groups to overpower you, but this appears to be a sort of coincidence. Overall, the difficulty feature useful to only those who really want to challenge themselves.
After entering the arena, players will immediately have to run and gather up ammunition. Specific weapon types require specific ammo crates. Luckily, most of the maps aren't very big, so it's fairly easy to memorize the locations of all the crucial pick-ups. There are no power-ups in War World, although besides stealth, it's difficult to imagine what else a player might require. The arsenal of weapons is already quite impressive. Players choose between three mech types, which you might have already guessed. First is the fast and light model, which is fragile and doesn't hold much ammo, but it performs hit-and-run maneuvers quite nicely. It also doesn't burn energy as quickly when speed boost is in use. Next is the moderate model, with slightly better armor and ammo capacity, sacrificing speed and energy efficiency. Lastly is the behemoth, with the best ammo capacity, thickest armor, and practically crawls across the maps. The mechs control very nicely, and respond very well considering how fast the action tends to be. Colors can be customized, but it doesn't appear as though any sort of decals can be imported.
There is an impressive array of equipment, starting with machine guns, to lasers, to shields and so-on. Each arm can be equipped independently, and the controls can be set so that each can either fire independently or chained together. Lasers do the most damage per shot, but they take a long time to charge up in between blasts. Machine guns are usually where it's at, with their rapid fire tearing through enemies. Mortar launchers and missiles can also be equipped alongside shielding (which renders you invincible but prevents you from firing) which requires energy to be regenerated over time. With enough levels and money, your mech will become the #1 badass of the arena in no time.
The arenas are very nicely put together, although none are terribly complex. None have any secret nooks (at least none that we've found). Most include some wide-open spaces like the desert arena and ruins, but there are still plenty of places to duck into for a while to avoid gunfire (especially from the drop ship) and make a mad dash for health or ammo. A destroyed enemy automatically leaves behind health, which increases the pace of the game, since the more you destroy the longer you can fight. One of the more interesting maps is the abandoned city, with its narrow walkways and multileveled buildings.
The only problem with the single player game is that it's the same game repeated 100 times. You enter an arena, waves of mechs come at you, destroy them however you can. Repeat. There are no other modes of play. Granted, the fights are quite fast-paced and frantic, leading to a lot of excitement, but somewhere around level 20 you start wishing there was a little bit more to things. This feeling can even carry over into multiplayer.
Currently, multiplayer only includes deathmatch, in both free-for-all and team deathmatch forms. There is no mode to confront the hordes of oncoming AI mechs with a friend or two. Heck, there isn't even a way to fill out a multiplayer game with bots. The developers are currently working on adding on new forms of gameplay, such as capture the flag, but those features have not been implemented at the time of this review. Although modding is possible, there is no built-in modding program that higher-priced titles like Unreal Tournament 2004 might include, forcing players to use third party programs. What does work is the fact that players are no longer constrained by monetary limitations, and are free to load up their mech with all the best weapons the game has to offer. The large explosions from mortar fire and the reticule tracking missiles are great, even though guns will be doing most of the work.
Generally speaking, even with its limitations, the multiplayer component is a lot of fun. It takes a fast trigger hi and some good old-fashioned strategy to keep from getting blown up. In our time playing, we did not suffer any significant issues around lag or otherwise. However, it was sometimes difficult to find other players.
When you get right down to it, this is a quality game that is action-packed that goes for a very reasonable price. Currently, players can download the game and play through the first few levels, with the option to buy a key to unlock it. Purchasing the key also makes the user eligible for all updates for this evolving game. So, future features and maps will be included with the one-time purchase! That is a great deal by any standard. The gameplay is fast and fun and the price is right, making War World an excellent place to visit!
