Plot:
John Quincy Archibald's son Michael collapses while playing baseball as a result of heart failure. John rushes Michael to a hospital emergency room where he is informed that Michael's only hope is a transplant. Unfortunately, John's insurance won't cover his son's transplant. Out of options, John Q. takes the emergency room staff and patients hostage until hospital doctors agree to do the transplant.

Un tata care are fiul bolnav de inima decide sa ia ostatici toti membrii camerei de garda a spitalului. Si asta pentru ca polita de asigurare a lui nu acopera costurile operatiei de transplant de inima pentru fiul sau. El ii va obliga astfel pe doctori sa efectueze transplantul. John Q.
Archibald lucreaza ca muncitor la o fabrica si se confrunta cu dificultati materiale atunci cand ii sunt reduse orele de munca. Tanarul sau fiu, Michael, sufera un atac de cord in timpul unui meci de baseball si este dus la spital unde John afla ca Michael are nevoie de un transplant de inima. Cu toate ca John are asigurare medicala, este informat de catre administratorul spitalului ca asigurarea sa nu poate acoperi o asemenea operatie costisitoare. Neavand de unde sa obtina suma necesara, John il convinge de doctorul Turner sa renunte la onorariul sau, dar si asa suma pentru operatie este prea mare. John clacheaza si ii ia prizonieri pe cativa oameni din staff-ul spitalului in speranta ca se va face ceva pentru fiul sau.
