A young man has dropped out of Queens College but desperately wants to please his
father, a federal judge who's harsh with his son. At his father's insistence
Seth Davis closes a casino he operates in his own house, mostly for college
students. Thinking he'll please dad, he takes a job in a small brokerage house
an hour from Manhattan, where trainees make cold calls to lists of well-paid men
and then apply high-pressure tactics to sell initial public offerings exclusive
to the firm. He's terrific at sales. Once training is over, the pay is phenomenal
and Seth wonders why. Curiosity leads him to ethical dilemmas, encounters with
the Feds, and new territory with his father.

Construit pe structura celebrului Wall Street, acest film exploatează tema rapacității corupatoare a lumii finanțelor new-york-eze dar într-un mod mai visceral decât predecesorul său cu Michael Douglas în rol principal.

De această dată protagonistul este Seth Davis, un student inteligent și ambițios, dar noncoformist care după ce este dat afară din colegiu din motive disciplinare organizează un inedit cazino în propriul său apartament. Datorită talentului său înnăscut de a-i îmbrobodi pe clienți pentru a-i ușura de bani, Seth va capta imediat atenția unei firme de brokeraj. Aici el va fi arondat chiar la departamentul Zero, locul unde se contactează telefonic cei interesați de tranzacții bursiere prin metode foarte persuasive.

În scurt timp, Seth devine un om de bază al firmei, și câștigă admirația superiorilor dar și a languroasei sale colege, Abby. Ajuns chiar în vârf, bogat și dorit de femei, Seth este pe cale să-și piardă sufletul. Vorba din bătrâni cum că banul este ochiul dracului își găsește în cazul său o puternică materializare.
