USGS scientists Harry Dalton is sent to the small
town of Dante's Peak to check on unusual activity.
Spurred by the volcano related death of a previous
lover, Dalton urges Mayor Rachel Wando to put the
city on alert. Dalton's boss, Paul Dreyfus arrives
and countermands Dalton demanding scientific proof.
When the proof finally arrives, Harry and Rachel
must go to the volcano to rescue her two children
and ex-mother-in-law. Tension builds as they try to
reach safety while the town below is destroyed.

Pierce Brosnan si Linda Hamilton sunt eroii principali ai filmului care va va trezi toate temerile. Fara nici un avertisment, ziua devine noapte. Aerul ia foc, iar solul se transforma in teroare fierbinte. Filmul „erupe” de efecte speciale deosebite, situatii limita, romantism si personaje remarcabile. Este o experienta pe care nu o veti uita niciodata.
Vulcanologul Harry Dalton și primarul din Dante's Peak, Rachel Wando, încearcă să-i convingă pe locuitorii orașului că trăiesc într-un pericol permanent. Orașul, cu numai 8000 de locuitori, se află la poalele unui vulcan uriaș care începe să se trezească la viață. Din păcate însă, oamenii nu au urechi să audă avertismentele expertului ajuns din întâmplare în Dante's Peak. Atât consiliul care se află în negocieri cu un investitor important, cât și șeful lui pun la îndoială înformațiile strânse de Harry și refuză să evacueze localitatea.
Harry încearcă tot posibilul și mai cere o întrevedere cu toți edilii, ședință în timpul căreia vulcanul erupe. Locuitorii panicați încearcă să fugă din calea naturii dezlănțuite, instaurând un adevărat haos în micul oraș.
Copiii lui Rachel se aventurează spre munte pentru a o salva pe bunica lor care nu vroia să-și părăsească locuința. Harry și Rachel pornesc în căutarea lor, înfruntând toate stihiile, într-o cursă pentru care premiul cel mare este supraviețuirea.
