Un scriitor de romane SF află ceea ce guvernul Statelor Unite știe de câțiva ani de zile: că scoarța terestră va fi distrusă din cauza unor colosale explozii solare, lucru prevestit de calendarul mayaș, care considera că lumea se va sfârși în anul 2012. Pentru scriitor și familia lui începe o cursă pe viață și pe moarte pentru a ajunge pe una din navele construite de guvern, singura șansă de supraviețuire într-o lume în pragul colapsului.Ne aflam in anul 2012. Jackson Curtis este un tata divortat, a carui fosta sotie s-a mutat impreuna cu cei 2 copii ai lor la noul ei iubit. Angajat ca sofer de limuzina, dar aspirand la o cariera de scriitor, acesta isi ia copiii intr-un week-end pentru o mini-excursie la parcul National Yellowstone. Aici cei 3 descopera ca mai multe sectiuni ale parcului sunt inchise de catre armata si oameni de stiinta ai guvernului. Dupa ce il intalneste pe Charlie, un angajat la radio, care crede ca toate aceste semne indica o catastrofa majora ce va duce la sfarsitul lumii, Jackson devine suspicios. Pamantul incepe sa aiba fisuri ingrijoratoare in zona Los Angeles-ului,iar catastrofele naturale progreseaza mai repede decat ar fi anticipat cineva. Jackson se intoarce in L.A. pentru a o salva pe fosta sotie si pe iubitul acestuia, inainte ca Los Angeles-ul sa se scufunde in Oceanul Pacific. In timp ce milioane de oameni mor peste tot in lume din cauza cutremurelor ce pareau sa nu se mai opreasca, Jackson se intoarce iar la parcul Yellowstone, unde il cauta si il gaseste pe Charlie, tipul care i-a spus ca sfarsitul e aproape pentru a afla mai multe raspunsuri. Profetia care spunea ca sfarsitul lumii va fi pe 21 decembrie 2012, data ce marcheaza sfarsitul calendarului mayas se dovedeste pana la urma a fi adevarata, iar Jackson incearca tot posibilul sa-si salveze familia si sa asigure ca umanitatea nu va fi complet stearsa de pe fata pamantului.
