Van Gogh - what can I say that hasn't been said about him before?
Well, not much. Just this: if ever you have a chance to see a large exhibition of his works, go and see it. It's probably the closest thing to heaven you're likely to experience during your lifetime. The exuberant beauty of his works, reaching out to you from every wall and corner of the museum,will not produce that well-known Florence culture shock in your mind; no, it will have a strangely comforting effect on you. There's all-pervading tranquility. Harmony. You're at peace with yourself and the world. The Doors of Perception are opened and you're all at once at another level of experience. Strange, isn't it, because the man Van Gogh cannot be said to have been of a quiet disposition. On the contrary, he was a nervous wreck for a major part of his life... And yet, such is the power of his works; true (sun) Flower Power! they're healing. Being the mentally unstable man he was, how on earth could he paint like that?
Perhaps he was trying to heal himself.
