Plot:
The basic premise of this film is what if one of gangland's Dons suddenly started having anxiety attacks because of past problems. When he decides to see a shrink, what can he tell him without giving away the gang's secrets and reveal too much about his own situations? Add to the fact that this type of individual is used to everyone catering to his whims and he expects the psychiatrist to do the same, neglecting his regular practice and his attempts to get married.

În acelaşi an în care serialul Clanul Soprano lansase deja o modă rafinată cu lipici la milioane de telespectatori din întreaga lume, această comedie neagră cu un Robert De Niro atipic în rol principal avea să facă furori în cinematografe. Respectând reţeta brevetată de faimosul serial, filmul parodiază genul peliculelor cu gangsteri, punând în cârca nașului Paul Vitti (De Niro) o povară de anxietăţi, temeri, sentimente de vinovăţie şi crize de identitate. Asemeni lui Tony Soprano, personajul lui De Niro, un cap al mafiei new-york-eze de această dată, trebuie să apeleze la serviciile unui psiholog interpretat cu mult umor de Billy Crystal. Năpădit de atacuri de panică provocate de sentimentul de vină cauzat de asasinarea iubitului său tată, Vitti ajunge să-l terorizeze pe Sobel. Terapia verbală a acestuia da roade nesperate şi gangsterul ajunge să-şi petreacă mai mult timp pe canapeaua roşie decât cu prietenii săi mafioţi.
Dependenţa sa de Sobel devine aşa de puternică încât nașul îşi urmăreşte psihiatrul peste tot, la restaurant, la tenis, ba chiar şi-n faţa altarului, la nunta acestuia cu frumoasa reporteriţa de televiziune, interpretată de Lisa Kudrow. Aşa de mult îşi neglijează Vitti munca, încât rivalul său de o viaţă, Primo Sidone (Chazz Palmintieri) începe să-l sape pentru a-i lua poziţia de lider. Totuşi, Vito care a învăţat ceva şmecherii de la Sobel reuşeşte să-şi păstreze supremaţia, uimitor, fără să folosească prea mult forţa fizică a gorilelor sale, ci pe cea a cuvintelor convingătoare şi bine alese.
Finalul aduce o nebănuită răsturnare de situaţie cu nişte agenţi FBI care cred că Vitti este pe cale să-şi lichideze taman doctorul care l-a scăpat de nervi.
