Este vorba chiar de forma insulei Corsicii, insulă care conține orașul Bonifacio în partea de jos, Bastia în partea de sus, și celelalte orașe în care are loc acțiunea din prezentul roman foileton. În mijlocul hărții există un alt element, și anume un cap de băștinaș (Moor's head) legat cu o năframă deasupra ochilor, un simbol antic, întregul ansamblu numit și "flag and coat of arms". Acest ansamblu reprezintă imaginea aflată pe steagul Corsicii așa cum se prezența el când Corsica, condusă de președintele Pasquale Paoli, s-a declarat o republică independentă în anul 1768, pentru că genovezii cedaseră provincia Franței, sub forma răscumpărării unei datorii. Corsicanii au rezistat mai mulți ani trupelor franceze, înainte de a fi înfrânți în bătălia de la Ponte-Novu. Deși pare ciudat și nefiresc, insula Corsica aparține Franței și în prezent...
