La prima aniversare de la moartea Papei, în Piața Caterdralei Sfântul Petru din Vatican a răsunat dureroasa lamentație a naiului lui Zamfir. Virtuozul român Gheorghe Zamfir, a susținut un concert "Totus Tuus" compus în memoria Papei Ioan Paul al II-lea. Este o poveste lungă, care a început în 1987... „Am fost preocupat de muzica sacră contemporană. Am trimis o scrisoare Cardinalului Joseph Ratzinger (viitorul Papă) și i-am solicitat o întâlnire. Am fost întâmpinat de către Cardinal în Caterdrala Sfântul Petru din Vatican (întâlnire care a durat o oră și cincisprezece minute). În anul următor, m-am întâlnit cu Papa Ioan Paul II-lea cu care am vorbit față în față cincisprezece minute. I-am sugerat Papei, ca muzica mea să-l însoțească în timpul pelerinajului său în jurul lumii și am concertat la sfârșitul întâlnirii. Papa a precizat că naiul este cel mai potivit instrument pentru o rugăciune de rămas bun. După această întâlnire, am avut onoarea de a susține două concerte la Universitatea Salezian (Vatican). Cardinalul Ratzinger, (de care nu am știut că și el este un muzician instruit) m-a sfătuit a înregistra un CD cu muzică sacră. Vaticanul tocmai începuse lansarea unor Cd-uri. Primul numar a apărut un compact disc cu lucrări de Vivaldi, iar al doilea a fost... al meu. Acum trei ani (2003) am fost invitat pentru prima dată de creatorul de ierarhie catolică-ortodoxă, poloneză, Episcopul Marian de la Toronto, pentru a vorbi la ceremonia oficială a Bisericii. A fost un concert care a sărbătorit 25 de ani de pontificat al Papei Ioan Paul II-lea, unde am interpretat acompaniat de corul si orchestra simfonică din Toronto. Concertul a fost urmărit de 16.000 de spectatori. Muzica nu cunoaște granițe și este un mediu excelent pentru unirea spirituală în credință. Un prim pas spre uniunea dorită între ortodoxie și catolicism. Cea mai mare realizare a Papei Ioan Paul al II-lea a fost de a uni națiunile în credință. (O unire incepută de predecesorii săi), la nivel european, si pe alte continente la nivel național.. Numai Karol Wojtyla a început să rezolve această problemă pe o scară globală. De aceea a fost atât de iubit și acceptat la nivel mondial. Sunt convins că el a părăsit această lume cu un sentiment de împlinire a misiunii sale. Eu, ca ortodox, aduc cu acest prilej o mică contribuție la reconcilierea spirituală dintre bisericile noastre. Ador Polonia, și poporul polozez. Am efectut cu regularitate cocerte în Polonia timp de 15 ani. Am concertat cu orchestra "Amadeus" condusă de Agnieszka Duczman, cu filarmonica din Cracovia, Gdansk, Varsovia ... Am dat concerte în mai multe catedrale din Polonia. Astăzi, omenirea așteaptă pace, împăcarea cu Dumnezeu. Așa cum a spus PapaIoan Paul II-lea: "Noi trebuie să uităm despre obstacolele de zi cu zi, in buna conviețuire cu ceilalți, pentru împăcarea cu Dumnezeu." Câteva luni înainte de prima întâlnire cu Papa Ioan Paul II-lea am avut două revelații... Părea că eram în picioare în fata catedralei Sfântul Petru, și eram înconjoarat de un nor alb, enorm. Era ca și cum Papa ar fi vrut să-mi spună, „Urmează-mă." Am pășit in catedrală, și acolo am zărit o scară mare... Pe partea de sus a ei mă așteapta Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea. El mi-a spus: „Haide, ești întru credința mea - fiul meu." În al doilea vis... eram amândoi împreună pe un deal verde. Era o vreme frumoasă, soarele strălucea... Ne-am dus la hanul din sat, unde am stat la o masă de lemn în compania mai multor persoane. Papa le-a zis: „Am să vă prezint pe fiul meu iubit." Aceste vise au însemnat mult pentru mine. Simțeam că Papa mă acceptă. Nu am destăinuit încă nimănui aceste vise... Deși mama mea era credincioasă, casa noastră nu a fost profund religiosă. Convertirea mea sa produs treptat. Influența decisivă a fost ca urmare unor serii de concerte între 1978-1982 în mai multe catedrale din întreaga lume. Am compus aranjamentete atât pe liturghia catolică cât și cea ortodoxă. În timpul acestor concerte, am descoperit că naiul are puterea rugăciunii. Am văzut credincioși plângând în timpul concertelor mele. Acestea toate, m-au făcut mai religios. După ce a luat puterea în 1967, Ceaușescu a fost foarte îngăduitor cu artiști (folosindu-ne în scopul de a își consolida poziția sa, apoi a început a se ne marginalizeze treptat). La sfârșitul anilor '70 am fost cunoscut în întreaga lume iar în propria mea țara am întâlnit doar obstacole. În cele din urmă m-am decis sa plec (în urma persecuțiilor). Comuniștii au mers atât de departe încât au încercat a se implica în viața mea. Relatively few German soldiers were in France, and those who were there had an easier time than the soldiers fighting against the Russians in the East. The only way Nazis could get Jews out of France was with the help of French authorities. Although the Nazis wanted the French to turn over all Jews, the French agreed at first to round up only Jews with foreign citizenship, many of whom were in France because they had fled the Nazis in other countries. The first roundup took place in July 1942. In an early morning visit, in the 20th Arrondissement of Paris, French Police knocked on the door of the Mullers—Jews originally from Poland. It was so named because Canada was thought to be a country of great riches. Inmates’ possessions were taken from them upon arrival and brought there. The items were sorted and sent back to Germany. Although Hungary was allied to the Nazis, Hitler considered the country an unreliable partner, especially when they refused to deport some 760,000 Hungarian Jews. While Jewish activist Joel Brandt was in Turkey trying to arrange a deal with the Allies, Hungarian Jews were being transported to Auschwitz. As a general rule photography was prohibited at Auschwitz, but a cameraman from the SS took these photographs of an arriving Hungarian transport On April 25, 1944, SS officer Adolf Eichmann, famous for organizing the mass murder of Jews, held a meeting in Budapest with a Hungarian Jew named Joel Brandt. Brandt was a well-known, politically active member of the Jewish community. During the meeting, Eichmann made the surprising offer to sell him one million Hungarian Jews. Nazi Germany, Eichmann explained, was more interested in goods (trucks, in particular) than in money, and he wanted Brandt to travel abroad and connect with international authorities to broker a deal. Liberation & Revenge Auschwitz prisoners are liberated by Russian forces "I realized that they were prisoners and not workers so I called out, "You are free, come out!" – Vasily Gromadsky, Russian officer, 60th Army, liberating Auschwitz As the Soviet army approached and the end of the war came closer the vast majority of Auschwitz prisoners were marched west by the Nazis, into Germany. Those few thousand remaining were thought too ill to travel, and were left behind to be shot by the SS. In the confusion that followed the abandonment of the camp, the SS left them alive. The prisoners were found by Soviet forces when they liberated Auschwitz on January 27, 1945. Vasily Gromadsky, a Russian officer with the 60th Army liberating Auschwitz recalls what happened.
