Plot Outline:
An alien phenomenon of unprecedented size and power is approaching Earth, destroying everything in its path. The only starship in range is the U.S.S. Enterprise--still in drydock after a major overhaul. As Captain Decker readies his ship and his crew to face this menace, the legendary Admiral James T. Kirk arrives with orders to take command of the Enterprise and intercept the intruder. But it has been three years since Kirk last commanded the Enterprise on its historic five year mission...is he up to the task of saving the Earth?

"Star Trek: The Motion Picture" relaunched the USS Enterprise and its crew led by Captain Kirk (William Shatner) into a dangerous mission. A gigantic cloud is making its way towards Earth and has already destroyed three heavily armed Klingon Cruisers as well as a Federation Deep Space outpost. Along the way to their rendezvous with the cloud Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) rejoins the crew. He is able to repair the ship's untested Warp Core and the Enterprise reaches the cloud with a day to spare. They begin a hazardous mission inside it and along the way their navigator Ilia (Persis Khambatta) is kidnapped and replaced with a probe from the alien ship named 'Vejur'. Ilia-Probe states repeatedly that Vejur is seeking his creator. When his signals go unanswered Vejur begins an attack on Earth which is halted when Kirk and crew discover that Vejur is infact the Voyager space probe that was lost three hundred years earlier. To complete Vejur's programming Commander Decker (Stephen Collins) sacrifices himself and merges with its massive databanks. A stunning and beautifully designed film that explores many deep issues and is sadly underrated by many "Star Trek" fans.

Plenty to enjoy here, 18 August 2004
8/10
Author: The_Void

I'm not a Star Trek fan. I have watched the show a few times, and I don't dislike it; but it's not the sort of thing that I would find myself watching week after week. Basically what I'm saying is: I'm not a Trekkie. I did, however, find lots to enjoy about this movie. The plot revolves around Captain Kirk, who has now been promoted to Admiral Kirk and is going through a mid-life crisis. However, his crisis couldn't have come at a worse time; as it has come on the eve of the testing for a new creation, known as 'Genesis', and not only that but a man named Khan has just been found on a planet that Kirk exiled him on, and he doesn't just want to give Kirk a friendly hug.

The acting in the film isn't great, actually, it's about the standard that you would expect from a TV show (which is no coincidence, I'm sure). I'm not sure if all the cast of the shows is present, because I didn't watch it often, but most of the main ones seem to be here; Spock, Kirk, Scottie, Sulu etc. Also joining them is Kirstie Alley, in the role of a young Vulcan commander and Ricardo Montalban who camps it up and dons a silly costume for the title role of Kirk's opposite number; Khan. His performance was the standout of the film for me; he's deliciously over the top, but despite that he comes across as believable as his mannerisms fit the character profile that he is portraying. Unfortunately, non of the show's best known baddies, the Klingons make an appearance. In fact, aside from the Vulcans, there are no aliens in the movie.

One thing that surprised me about the film is the meatiness of the characters. As it's a film of a TV show, I wasn't expecting any development or for the characters to step out of their character arks, but they are surprisingly well done. Some characters also go through a change during the movie (some more than others), which is nice to see. The pace is also a good thing about the movie, as it doesn't let up and manages to stay interesting all the way through. One thing that worried me before watching the movie is that I would get bored as I don't know the show, but that didn't become a problem at any point.

I am proof that you don't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy this movie. There's more than enough for the casual movie fan to enjoy about it, it's an entertaining romp and overall I give this Star Trek film a 'G' for 'good' rating.

Star Trek 3 - The Search For Spock(1984)

Plot Outline:
Admiral Kirk's defeat of Khan and the creation of the Genesis planet are empty victories. Spock is dead and McCoy is, seemingly inexplicably, being driven insane. Then an unexpected visit from Sarek, Spock's father, provides a startling revelation: McCoy is harboring Spock's living essence. With one friend alive and one not, but both in pain, Kirk attempts to help his friends by stealing the Enterprise and defying Starfleet's Genesis quarantine. But the Klingons have also learned of Genesis and race to meet Kirk in a deadly rendezvous.

William Shatner VS Christopher Lloyd, 15 April 2004
Author: DarthBill

Picking up where "The Wrath of Khan" left off, McCoy seems to be going mad, the Enterprise is being retired, Kirk mourns the loss of Spock and his son Dr. David Marcus is off exploring his newly created Genesis planet with the lovely Vulcan vixen Saavik (exit Kirstie Alley, enter Robin Curtis). Kirk then finds out from Sarek (Mark Lenard, who had a brief, unrecognizable role in the opening of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" as an ill fated Klingon Commander and played a Romulan before playing Spock's dad) catches up with Kirk and tells him that there's a chance at resurrecting Spock, who's mind and spirit are housed in McCoy's brain while his body is on Genesis. Feeling obligated to return the favor for saving them all at the end of #2, Kirk and the gang hijack the Enterprise and rush towards the Genesis planet to rescue Spock "in whatever form he may still be alive." Meanwhile, a bodily resurrected and rapidly re-aging Spock has been found by Saavik and David and they are stranded on Genesis after their ship is destroyed by Klingon Commander Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) and he comes looking for them in hopes of unlocking the secrets of the Genesis project, which he thinks could be used as a weapon against his people. Who will survive?

Considered by some to be trash and by others to be the only good odd numbered Star Trek film, this is a sufficiently entertaining bit of science fiction yarn that continues following the theme of what happens when you mess with mother nature. Good performances as usual, with Lloyd giving one of his best as the Klingon Commander Kruge, who becomes oddly sympathetic in light of his blood thirsty actions when you consider that he was just looking out for his own brood and was willing to spare the crew of the USS Grissom. Shatner's brawl with Lloyd is also fun to watch, and the film still has that great James Horner music. Don't miss Shatner kicking Lloyd in the face shouting "I... have HAD... enough of... YOU!"

Robin Curtis is a capable Saavik. As a bit of trivia, Saavik apparently engaged in sexual intercourse with Spock while he was going through his aging phases and, as part of an idea never utilized in the films or even in the spin off series, Saavik became pregnant with Spock's child, which was originally why she was supposed to stay on Vulcan in "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home".

I liked this movie. It is my favorite Star Trek film. The blend of scifi and comedy works.

Ever been shocked if you visit another country and have to adapt to its culture? Try visiting another time period! That's what Kirk and company do, as they visit 20th century America to retrieve a pair of humpback whales to ward off an alien probe, and you will love their (mis)adventures as they adapt.

Worst of all the Trek movies, 12 February 2002
Author: Ron Panarotti
What's frustrating about Trek 5 is that it was the chance for a fresh start without the ongoing plot baggage of the three movies that immediately preceded it. Instead of a gripping new adventure, what we got in the summer of 1989 was a lame retread of elements already seen in earlier Trek movies.

The idea, at least, was something new -- dealing with the nature of God. This is a premise suitably bold, ambitious and potentially having complexity and depth to be worthy of Trek. But the movie does not really deliver on the potential of this idea.

Trek 5 opens promisingly, with some breathtaking shots of Yosemite National Park. If you're dealing with the awesome power of God, there are few places more impressive to behold than Yosemite. But the scenes in the park, where Kirk, Spock and McCoy are vacationing, outstay their welcome. A scene in which Kirk climbs a sheer rock face without any rope or cable support goes on too long and is unbelievable.

The movie was directed by William Shatner, whose purpose here seems to be to give Kirk the lion's share of screen time at the expense of the other characters. Shatner is not much of an actor, so it's no surprise that he fails as a director as well.

Once the crew return to the new Enterprise NCC-1701-A, the story proper begins. Spock's half-brother (!!) hijacks the ship in hopes of finding a Supreme Being in a place called Sha-Ka-Ri, which is the Vulcan concept of the afterlife. Here we get into recycling of plot elements from previous films.

Like in Trek 2, we have a madman and his band of ragtag followers taking over a Federation ship for their own purposes. Like in Trek 3, there is also a generic Klingon warrior who has no motivation other than the desire to kick some butt. Consequently, the movie is boring, predictable and stale. I liked the scenes that deal with the hidden pain of Spock and McCoy, but these scenes aren't enough to redeem the film.

The acting is a mixed bag. Shatner, Nimoy and DeForest Kelley, as always, are terrific together, and they again display the chemistry that makes Trek work. The rest of the crew are forgotten, pretty much. The use of Uhura is shameful -- her one big scene involves putting on a strip show to divert alien herders while Kirk and company steal their horses.

As the villain, Laurence Luckinbill fails to make an impression. His hostages -- various Federation ambassadors -- make no impact and stand around like cardboard cutouts. There are some good moments of comedy, like when Scotty hits his head, but again, this can't save the film.

The special effects are terrible -- see what happens when you don't use Industrial Light & Magic? The showdown with "God" at the end is nothing more than flashes of blue light -- really lame.

Instead of giving the original crew a new lease on life, this movie convinced Paramount that it was time to push them out the door. They are totally wasted in this movie, which has no adventure or drama and is actually worse than "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

Now this was a movie. The best case scenario for the orginial crew to leave the movie scene, making peace with the Klingons and Sulu finally becoming a Captain. Everything was great in this movie. It had humor, adventure, mystery and just about anything else you could possibly want. The best behind #2.

An underachieving but solid entry, 8 April 2006
Author: mutty_mcflea
The seventh film in the series passes the torch on to the crew of 'The Next Generation', with mixed results. A strong story was required to celebrate the meeting of Captains Kirk and Picard, but the plot is frustratingly underdeveloped and trundles towards a damp fuse finale. It's a shame, too, that Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley declined to appear. But there is excitement and humour along the way, plenty of thoughtful dialogue, an excellent performance from Patrick Stewart, and William Shatner seems to be having fun in his farewell performance, practically winking at the camera at times. The 'Trek' films are so middling that this is automatically superior to the previous six; all the same, it carries with it the feeling that such a key chapter in 'Trek' history should have had more meat on its bones.

The Next Generation's Finest Moment..., 2 December 2003
9/10
Author: Ben Burgraff

Star Trek's successor to Gene Roddenberry, Rick Berman, never allowed the poor reviews for STAR TREK: GENERATIONS to upset him; he had been given an 'obligation' to provide a transition film between the original cast's series, and his own 'Next Generation' films, and 'killing' James Kirk freed him to focus on the film he REALLY wanted to make, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. And he created a classic, a film that for many fans has become the 'definitive' STAR TREK movie.

From the opening scenes, which re-introduce the 'Next Generation's' greatest villains, the Borg, finally achieving their long-time goal of attacking Earth, and literally tearing Starfleet to shreds, as Picard and the Enterprise are ordered to stand down (Picard had been 'assimilated' once by the cyborgs, and the success of his 'deprogramming' was in question), there was an intensity that 'Trek' films hadn't shown since THE WRATH OF KHAN. When Picard decides to disobey orders and go 'in Harm's Way', you nearly want to cheer! Turning the battle around, the Enterprise sees victory at hand...until they discover that the 'core' of the Borg mother ship has plunged into Earth's atmosphere, and gone back in time. As the crew glimpses a 'changed' Earth, with humanity totally assimilated by the Borg, they plunge after the mother ship, to prevent history from being rewritten.

Quite an opening scene!

The film breaks into two stories, each entertaining. In an era two hundred years earlier, with Earth reeling from internal wars that have devastated much of the planet, Picard realizes that the Borg is attempting to prevent warp drive creator Dr. Zefram Cochrane from ever completing his prototype spaceship, thus denying the galaxy to the human race, and leaving them defenseless against the Borg. As First Officer Riker and most of the series' regulars protect the feisty engineer (first introduced in the original 'Trek' TV series by hunky Glenn Corbett; in FIRST CONTACT, the role is played by James Cromwell, hawk-nosed, antisocial, and hooked on ancient Rock n' Roll music), Data and Picard must deal with the growing Borg infiltration and assimilation of the Enterprise, and the imperious Borg Queen (lovely Alice Krige), who seduces Data with a chance to become 'human'.

Jonathan Frakes proves an excellent director, balancing the action, comic, and dramatic elements with sensitivity and skill. While most of the series' regulars have little to do (a problem that would never be resolved in the 'Next Generation' films), Frakes still manages to give each a bit of on-screen time to at least remind fans that they are present, and he even manages to provide a brief but funny cameo by semi-regular fan favorite Dwight Schultz, as the terminally shy Lt. Reggie Barclay.

FIRST CONTACT has so many memorable moments that it is nearly impossible to pick a single favorite one out. Cochrane's use of Steppenwolf's 'Magic Carpet Ride' as launch music for his guided missile/spaceship...Alfre Woodard's Lily Sloane, hiding in terror from the Borg, but still able to lecture Picard on doing the 'right thing'...'Star Trek: Voyager' regular Robert Picardo in a cameo as his medical hologram character, at a key moment...Data delivering the famous Borg 'tag line'...the Vulcan science party (led, although unmentioned, by Sarek, Spock's father), bemused at meeting the 'new kids on the block' for the first time...this movie has it all!

There is only one major continuity error; the Borg, as cyborgs, depend on their human 'host' bodies to survive (a key factor in the film's climax), yet in one whole sequence they operate in the vacuum of space WITHOUT spacesuits! I cringe each time I see the scene, but I STILL love the movie!

One other key element of the film cannot be praised enough; Jerry Goldsmith's score is one of his finest, combining the best elements of the STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE theme with a sweeping inspirational hymn for Cochrane, and eerie, discordant music for the Borg. The score is so profoundly moving that it could stand alone, as a symphonic work.

Sadly, Berman and company never achieved the same heights with either of the subsequent 'Trek' films, but at least we have FIRST CONTACT, to show that a 'Next Generation' feature could be done 'right'.

A less action-oriented film, but it's a refreshing change of pace., 18 August 2002
10/10
Author: Luka2095

I heard a lot of complaints on this movie and I think it's rediculous. This Star Trek movie wasn't about excessive violence and action, but more or less on thoughtfulness, and peacefulness. Nothing in the movie will get your heart pounding or excite you like the other Star Trek films, but this movie is different. Insurrection boasts a wonderful soundtrack throughout the film. Also the opening sequence is truly moving, some really nicely constructed music. The sets were fabulous. The Bak'u village looked superb, and looked like a garden of peace, I liked it. The light-hearted comedy which was thrown in this film was of course great. It is natural, like a big reunion of familiar faces. The action is pretty good, but is for the most part toned down. One thing I do admit in this film is the villains are somewhat weak. Ruafo was not exactly the most menacing villain I have seen, but overall he gets the job done. I admire the fact that Insurrection is a very heart-warming, and thoughtful film, with some above par special effects, good amount of action, and some nice comedic touches. You can tell the TNG crew had a lot of fun making this movie. Again if your looking for more action you might want to go back to First Contact.

To aspire is to survive in this absorbing sci-fi staple., 12 December 2002
Author: John DeSando

The titular bad guy of `Star Trek: Nemesis,' a DNA copy of Captain Jean Luc Picard called Shinzon, wants to destroy humanity through Picard. This franchise has long mined the alter- ego, alternate-universe motifs to create havoc with its steely captains, so this one is no different.

What is different about `Nemesis,' however, is the unabashed affection for what it means to be human, so much so that the glamorous special effects inspire not awe but a feeling of well being that promises all is as it should be in space even thousand of years from now-we will always be chasing our humanity through the universe. Data's earlier mechanical version comes on board but proves deficient in the experience Data has gained, making Data a greater machine on the cyber evolutionary scale because he is closer to human.

Layered on to this perennial humanity motif is a relative newcomer: `Be more than you are,' a variant of the 20th century American army's `Be all that you can be.' Shinzon has no desire to be better than he is, while Picard, from cadet days, always aspired-the distinction between the copy and the real thing is crucial for putting the humans one up on the cyborg types. Data's `brother' is additionally deficient because he lacks Data's yearning to know everything about humans. To aspire is to survive in this absorbing sci-fi staple.

It is tough to beat the special effects, but Patrick Stewart is so good as Captain Picard that I'd vote for him for president if the Democrats were savvy enough to nominate him. As Picard, he also fulfills J.B. Yeats's description that the real leader `serves truth, not people.' As an actor whose recent one-man `Christmas Carol' on Broadway was universally acclaimed, he moves an eyebrow with grace before anyone can guess he's acting.

In the end `Nemesis' turns on the idea that mankind must continue to look to the stars to carry on its mission of hope and love. A truly successful series negates thoughts that any installment should be the last. I don't want `Star Trek' ever to end. This film, after all, is `Nemesis,' and she is a lame goddess who eventually catches up with everyone. I hope she is very slow with this franchise, which deserves to live long and prosper.
