Trazyn the Infinite
Who is Trazyn the Infinite?
Trazyn the Infinite is a Necron Overlord, an ancient being whose consciousness is housed in a body of living metal. While most of his kind are mindless killing machines or grim despots, Trazyn is unique: he is a self-proclaimed archaeologist, historian, and, most famously, a collector.
His primary motivation is not conquest or destruction, but preservation. He believes the galaxy is a chaotic and self-destructive place, and that it is his solemn duty to "rescue" its most significant artifacts, creatures, and even people from oblivion by adding them to his vast museum-galleries on the tomb world of Solemnace.
To achieve this, he employs a network of spies, surrogates, and advanced Necron technology. He can project his consciousness into other Necron bodies, making him virtually immortal (hence "the Infinite"). His collection is the stuff of legend, containing everything from priceless works of art to entire regiments of Imperial Guardsmen frozen in time, a shard of a C'tan god, and even a being he claims is a clone of the Primarch Fulgrim. He often "loans" out these exhibits to serve as his personal army when his galleries are threatened or when he needs to stage a distraction for a new acquisition.
Why is He So Loved by Fans?
Trazyn the Infinite is one of the most beloved characters in the setting, not in spite of being a Necron, but largely because of it. His popularity stems from several key factors:
A Breath of Fresh Air: In the famously bleak and self-serious "grimdark" universe of Warhammer 40,000, Trazyn is a source of sophisticated, dry wit and dark comedy. His novels and stories are less about desperate battles for survival and more about his ludicrous, millennia-spanning schemes and his petty rivalry with Orikan the Diviner. He provides much-needed levity and a different style of narrative.
A Relatable (and Absurd) Motivation: While he's an ancient alien robot, his core drive is surprisingly human: he's a collector. Many fans in the hobby, who themselves collect and paint miniatures, see a humorous, exaggerated reflection of their own passion in Trazyn's obsessive need to acquire and catalogue everything of note. He is the ultimate "completionist."
The Ultimate Wildcard: Trazyn is not aligned with any of the major factions. He doesn't care about the Imperium, Chaos, or the Tyranid threat beyond how they might affect his collection or present an opportunity for a new exhibit. He famously appeared during the Fall of Cadia, one of the most pivotal events in the lore, not to save the day, but to ensure he acquired some prime Cadian specimens for his museum. This makes him an unpredictable and highly entertaining agent of chaos who operates on his own set of rules.
A Unique Perspective: Through Trazyn's eyes, the epic tragedies and grand heroes of the 41st Millennium are reduced to potential museum pieces. This provides a cynical, detached, and often hilarious meta-commentary on the setting itself. He is a character who appreciates the lore of the universe more than anyone, but in the most possessive and objectifying way imaginable.
