About: In August 2014, Big Big Train gathered at Real World Studios, Wiltshire, for a week of rehearsals. Formed in 1990, the band had, in recent years, focused their efforts on writing and recording and had developed a richly arranged blend of electric and acoustic instrumentation. However, a growing profile in the progressive rock scene had led to increased demand for Big Big Train to play live again.
Unsure about how easy it would be to do justice to the band’s recordings on stage, Big Big Train decided to try out live renditions of their songs in the controlled conditions of a studio environment. For this, the band was expanded to eight musicians alongside the five-piece brass band that had featured on The Underfall Yard and English Electric albums.
Stone & Steel - the title referencing both the band’s lyrical themes of English landscape and history, and the fabric of Real World Studios itself - documents the week’s rehearsals and the band’s transition from studio to stage. It features live performances of nine songs, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from Real World, and, recorded a year later, four live performances from Big Big Train’s first gigs in 17 years at Kings Place, London.
