Sven Hassel (19 April 1917 – 21 September 2012) was the pen name of the Danish-born Břrge Willy Redsted Pedersen who wrote novels set during World War II. In Denmark he used the pen name Sven Hazel.
Hassel's books are written in the first person, with Hassel himself as a character, though not necessarily the lead character. Hassel's view of war is brutal; in his books, soldiers fight only to survive. People are killed by chance or with very little reason. Unsympathetic Prussian officers constantly threaten their men with courts-martial and execute them with little provocation. Disgruntled soldiers occasionally kill their own officers to get rid of them. By graphically portraying war as violent and hopeless in such manner, Hassel's books have been said to contain an anti-war message.
In total he published 14 novels. Hassel's books are particularly popular in the United Kingdom, where he sold 15 million of the 53 million sold worldwide.

The Danish author Sven Hazel, who died in Barcelona in 2012 at the age of 95, left behind the manuscript The Glorious Defeat, which describes the fighting in Berlin before the final and final battle. Sven Hazel's war books have sold close to a million copies in Norway over 50 years. The anniversary book marks that in 2013 it is 60 years since Sven Hazel's first book The Legion of the Damned was published in 1953. The book is also a tribute to a great author and his unique writing. In Denmark, the Legion of the Damned has been on sale continuously for almost 60 years, which is unique in Danish literary history.
