December 31, 1999 wasn’t the end of civilization as some had predicted, but it was a pivotal point in my life. Travel is high on the list of things I love to do. Not the bus tours where a guide tells you when to point and click your camera. I prefer carrying a backpack, buying a rail pass, and waiting until a village calls to me before stepping off the train to explore. I don’t mind not being able to speak the language, although I’ve studied several. Sign language works quite well and can lead to many funny situations!
