Plot:
A confusing intro leads back to 1944, and a concentration camp on the fringes of Central Europe. Camp commandant August Dailermann (Tomas Arana) and his blonde wife, Franziska (Chiara Conti), chafe under the dullness of provincial life in the officer's drab quarters. Dailermann soothes his nerves with loud doses of Puccini, while his petulant wife objects to his taste in music.

The need for a new servant prompts the entrance of Miklos (Andrea Rienzi), a Hungarian Jewish prisoner with an ear for languages and an eye for modern art. Among his possessions confiscated on arrival at the camp are two rolled canvases, which he saves from destruction by alerting Dailermann to the fact that "degenerate painters" Oskar Kokoschka and Otto Dix fetch good money outside the Reich.

Bored Franziska decides that a cultural education could relieve the tedium, and -- in a plot device bizarrely reminiscent of "Born Yesterday" -- she befriends Miklos so he can teach her about art. Subsequently, Franziska makes a deal with her husband: She'll stop nagging him about his music if he'll cull a group of artists from the camp prisoners to paint her portrait. He, in turn, pulls out all the musicians and (shades of "Playing for Time" forms an orchestra. Meanwhile, Miklos seems to enjoy a surprising amount of freedom, apart from occasional beatings.

High on the pic's catalog of blunders in taste is a scene in which the prisoners bring Nazi soldiers to tears with a performance of "Vissi d'arte." Script is bogged down by so many philosophical discussions of Art and Life that it's almost ripe for satirization. Franziska, for example, has no clue that the camp she lives in is a death factory.
