This series explores the myths and the intense secrecy surrounding the SAS, and features interviews with and testimonies from soldiers, many of whom talk publicly for the first time about their extraordinary lives in the SAS. This film tells of the SAS’s little known exploits in Oman. The organisation’s spectacular victory at the Jebel Akhbar established its credentials as desert fighters par excellence and began its long association with battles over oil. Oman in ‘58, Dhofar in ‘72, Iraq in ‘91, Afghanistan 2001 were all desert and mountain environments in which the SAS has operated often hundreds of miles behind enemy lines. Oman was also the site of one the great untold battles, where 400 rebels attacked a fort at Mirbat which was guarded by nine SAS men. Against all odds the SAS held out until they were relieved three hours later.
