A Navy commando, Lt. (jg) Ken Braden, is sent on a secret mission to photograph a Japaneses code book. He's to be taken there aboard a submarine commanded by Paul Stevenson and then return without the Japanese knowing they ever been there. Stevenson is a by-the-book captain who follows his operational orders to the letter. That approach led to the death of a member of his crew on his last mission and he's lost the respect and support of his crew. Braden and Stevenson don't quite hit it off at first but the eventually develop a respect for one another.

Locotenentul Kenneth M. Braden este un ofiţer al marinei americane specializat în operaţiuni tip comando, misiuni subacvatice. În California anilor ’40 în timpul războiului din Pacific el trăieşte o aventură cu o tânără, Sally Johnson de care era îndrăgostit şi o cere de nevastă. Fata nu i dă un raspuns pe loc, cere un oarecare timp de gândire. Între timp locotenentul Braden este chemat la datorie în Pacificul de Sud pentru o operaţiune ultrasecretă care viza o incursiune în teritoriul inamic pe o insulă unde era instalat un emiţător radio japonez care transmitea codificat ordine pentru navele japoneze aflate în zonă. Braden avea misiunea să sustragă din acea bază codurile secrete folosite la criptarea transmisiunilor, pentru a putea fi folosite la interceptarea comunicaţiilor de analiştii americani. Locotenentul este transportat pe respectiva insulă de un submarin care îl debarcă foarte aproape de coastă şi îl aşteaptă să-şi îndeplinească misiunea, după care să îl transporte înapoi.
Drumul acestora nu este scutit de pericole şi capcane. Locotenentul îşi duce la bun sfârşit misiunea, iar la întoarcere este aşteptat de Sally care de fapt lucra în Serviciile Secrete americane, fiind şi ea îndrăgostită până peste cap de chipeşul locotenent Braden. Filmul se termină cu happy end.
