There’s something strangely compelling about the relationship (or the fascinating lack of relationship) of the film’s father and daughter. It is as if they were created precisely for the snow white, bleak, and hauntingly joyless landscape they find themselves surviving in. His resistance to connection and her lack of defiance to her father’s illogical persistence on being hermits to the rest of the world are only cracked open by their unrelated encounters with death. The ending, ambiguous but suggestive of a graduation from their shared sad lives, never foregos of the droll and the melancholic, traits that pervade the film right from the beginning.
