Harmony Hollow's Cool Timer is a free 99-hour timer with countdown and stopwatch functions plus the ability to play any MP3, WAV, or MIDI sound file as an alarm as well as display a scrolling message to remind you why you set the timer in the first place.
Cool Timer's small interface is skinned in garishly bright colors that certainly help make it visible on the desktop, but it's easy to change the program's skin color as well as the colors of the digits and buttons, or to select default Windows colors for maximum visual integration. Cool Timer displays hours, minutes, and seconds to two digits. The interface presents a large Start button and six smaller buttons labeled Options, Reset, Presets, Tray, Help, and About.
The Options page let us select and test an alarm sound from a drop-down list that included the default alarm, an old-time car horn, or we could browse to our own file; we could also set the alarm to loop or play once. There is a text field for messages that scroll in a pop-up window when the alarm is triggered. Again, this handy extra can remind you why you set the timer in the first place, which might be entirely too easy to forget if you set it to count down the full 99 hours. We could also set "always on top" and window size choices. The program offers Countdown, Wake, and Stopwatch Modes. We selected Countdown, entered a message, and set our interval. Cool Timer counted down the seconds, sounded the alarm, and displayed our message on time. The Stopwatch mode only offers 1-second intervals, but it's more than adequate for the kitchen or other general uses. Wake mode serves as an alarm clock. The Presets button let us add and load preconfigured timer settings so there's no need to manually re-enter them each time.
