Doctor Who e un serial care durează de 48 de ani şi, cu timpul, a devenit o parte semnificativă a culturii mass-media din Regatul Unit. Acesta prezintă aventurile unui Lord al timpului de pe Gallifrey. El este un fel de salvator al omenirii, nu numai de invazii extraterestre, dar şi de tot felul de nenorociri care se abat asupra oamenilor. Poate călători în Timp şi Spaţiu cu nava lui spaţială numită TARDIS - Dimensiuni Relative Temporale în Spaţiu- şi întotdeauna are de partea lui o însoţitoare care îl ajută în nenumăratele aventuri. Serialul a reuşit să reziste atâta vreme datorită poveştilor spuse, a profesionalismului actorilor, dar şi a unui mic truc inventat de un scenarist din anii '60 numit regenerare. Odată ce actorul e prea bătrân, ori i se înrăutăţeşte starea de sănătate, ori vrea să plece din serial din motive diverse, are loc o regenerare. Personajul numit Doctor Who e grav rănit şi trece prin acest proces numit regenerare. Acesta suferă o transformare fizică, căpătând o nouă înfăţişare, un trup nou, chiar şi o personalitate nouă, păstrându-şi amintirile. În cazul celui de-al 11-lea Doctor interpretat de Matt Smitt, a avut loc şi un fel de regenerare a Tardisului, acesta bucurându-se de un nou design. Şi gadgetul pe care îl foloseşte Doctorul, adică şurubelniţa sonică, a avut parte de o astfel de regenerare odată cu transformarea Doctorului.
