Cu o verva teribila, Meryl canta, glumeste, evoca amintirile unei tinereti petrecute pe scena, are emotii pentru debutul scenic al fiicei ei si in perioada aceasta insufleteste ultima reprezentatie dintr-un spectacol emblematic pentru America timp de 30 de ani. Merly Streep este reputata drept una dintre actritele care fac imposibilul pentru pregatirea rolului. Pentru a putea interpreta rolul Sophiei Zawistowska din Alegerea Sophiei din 1982, Meryl l-a implorat la propriu in genunchi pe regizorul Alan J. Pakula, iar apoi a invatat limba poloneza ca sa aiba accentul potrivit. Dustin Hoffman declara ca dupa ce a jucat cu ea in Kramer contra Kramer in 1979, a urat-o pentru afurisenia ei, desi o respecta foarte mult ca actrita. Rolul fusese scris pentru Kate Jackson, unul dintre "ingerii lui Charly" din serialul tv cu un urias succes in epoca. Kate nu a putut deveni Joanna Kramer din cauza programului incarcat si Meryl a preluat dificilul rol al femeii care-si lasa barbatul super ocupat sa-si creasca singur copilul. Conditia ei a fost ca rolul sa fie rescris deoarece, in viziunea ei, era esential ca filmul sa explice lumii de ce Joanna si-a parasit familia. In epoca respectiva, o astfel de atitudine era o decizie uriasa pentru o femeie, iar motivele ei trebuiau limpede aratate. Filmul a devenit primul ei mare succes pe ecran, aducandu-i primul Oscar dintr-o serie record. Meryl a fost atat de naucita de emotie incat in timpul ceremoniei si-a uitat statueta la toaleta. In februarie 2003 ea avea sa bata un record de 13 nominalizari la Oscar in 26 de ani, intrecand-o chiar pe extraordinara Catharine Hepburn, care a obtinut 12 nominalizari in 48 de ani. Catharine a spus de altfel ca Meryl este actrita ei preferata si ca rotitele mintii ei se invart perfect, iar Diane Keaton a afirmat: "Meryl Streep este geniul generatiei noastre". Acum, Meryl se lupta sa le insufle tinerelor actrite inspiratia de a nu se dezbraca prea usor pe ecran. Un principiu pe care l-a respectat cu strictete toata viata, chiar cu mult inainte de a deveni o diva.
