Arthur Bishop este un asasin profesionist care este de acord să îi transmită secretele meseriei fiului unuia dintre cei pe care i-a omorât chiar el. Remake al filmului cu acelaşi titlu din anul 1972, "The Mechanic" îi are în centrul acţiunii pe asasinul profesionist Arthur Bishop şi pe discipolul acestuia, Steve McKenna. Arthur Bishop a lucrat întotdeauna pe cont propriu, cu o meticulozitate, ingeniozitate şi eficacitate care l-au făcut celebru în branşa criminalilor plătiţi, studiindu-şi cu mare atenţie victimele înainte de a perfecta planul de atac şi nelăsând în urmă niciun fel de indicii cu privire la identitatea sa. Operând într-o lume în care nu se aplică regulile convenţionale ale moralitătţi şi în care orice greşeala îl poate costa viaţa, veteranul acceptă cu reticenţă să îl ia sub aripa lui ocrotitoare pe tânărul Steve McKenna şi să îl antreneze în arta de a ucide pentru bani. Ambiţiosul ucenic dă dovada de o abilitate şi de o cruzime care îl vexează chiar sş pe mentorul sau, motiv pentru care între cei doi asasini intervine un conflict. Oare Arthur Bishop doreşte să îl iniţieze pe Steve McKenna în secretele meseriei pentru a exista cineva care sa îi continue cu succes cariera sau pentru a se recompensa faţă de o fostă victima a lui?
