Crows Zero







Crows: Episode 0 is set in an all boys Japanese high school, where instead of having educational classes and courses, what gets put on screen happens to be an ecosystem of triad society split into different turfs according to grade levels, classes and reputation. Unification of all levels in the school is a challenge, and new boy Genji Takaya (Shun Oguri) throws down the gauntlet on the first day to take down reigning school gangster Tamao Serizawa (Takayuki Yamada), which he finds impossible given that the latter's picked up by the police.
But of course there are unwritten rules to follow in order to engage the top, and he enlists the help of a two-bit average Yakuza hoodlum Ken Katagiri (Kyosuke Yabe) to help plot his path of success. For the most parts, the story is simple to follow, as we shadow Genji in his quest to conquer the high school class by class, through sheer brute force, gaining of respect, or simply just friendship established. As his reputation grows, so does his threat towards Serizawa, which sets up the inevitable climatic showdown where the rival gangs gotta settle who's gonna rule the school. As the saying goes, one mountain cannot hide 2 tigers.

In modern-day Japan, the worlds of the human and the yokai often collide, and usually not in the most pleasant of manners. The Hidden Blade



During the time of change of the mid-19th Century, Yaichiro is bid farewell by his fellow samurai friends Munezo and Samon as he leaves their clan’s fiefdom on the northwest coast of Japan (Unasaka) to take an important position within the shogunate in far away Edo. Munezo has lived modestly with his mother and sister Shino after his father was forced into suicide after the failure of a bridge project. Kie, a farm girl serves them as a maid in their house. As time passes, Munezo’s sister marries Samon, his mother dies, Kie is married into a merchant family, and he is required to learn western methods of warfare such as the use of artillery and firearms from an official sent from Edo. Learning that Kie is ill due to abuse, he rescues her from her husband’s family. Although sharing mutual affection and respect, a marriage between Munezo and Kie is still impossible due to different castes, and when he, now a bachelor, is criticized for her serving in his house, Munezo sends her back to her father’s farm. After being caught in a failed political intrigue, Yaichiro is sent home in disgrace and imprisoned in solitary confinement. After Yaichiro escapes, Munezo is ordered to prove his innocence from complicity by killing his old friend, and he seeks the help of his old teacher, the sword master Kansai Toda. Although Yaichiro had been the better swordsman when they studied together, Toda entrusted the secret of the “Hidden Blade” only to Munezo.

The Black Swindler







One, called the ‘WHITE SWINDLER’ finds a mark, and steals money. The ‘RED SWINDLER’ preys on the other sex, and steals a mark’s body and soul.
Then there is the ‘BLACK SWINDLER’. Ignoring ordinary marks, targeting only the white and red herons, and preying on their flesh grown fat and corrupt with the money they have stolen, he is the worst of them all.
The victim of a fraud artist, a father and his family commit suicide...the only one left alive is his son, Takashi Kurosaki, who vows revenge on all the scam artists that infest this world. The path he has chosen is that of the ‘black swindler’.
Kurosaki buys information on ‘white herons’ from ‘the fixer’. Ironically, this underworld ‘fixer’ is none other than Katsuragi, the man who drove Kurosaki’s family to destruction. Under the burden of this whim of fate, Kurosaki improvises one unique method after another as he stalks his prey.
His current target is Ishigaki, a corporate fraud artist whose modus operandi involves making a present of a very expensive version of the corporate seal to a company president. This seal, being the equivalent of a signature, is then officially registered, and only then does Ishigaki send out a flood of fake contracts bearing the new seal. His latest victim is a woman executive whose daughter is in need of a heart transplant.
Before Kurosaki strikes at Ishigaki, a mysterious woman named Sakura appears. Her father, it turns out, was also ruined by Katsuragi. In contrast to Kurosaki, though, she has chosen to rebuild her life by forgiving and forgetting, so much so that she is actually in love with Katsuragi.
Regarding the love-hate relationship between them, Kurosaki is also forced to admit that his feelings towards Katsuragi are complicated. Katsuragi is the person he hates most, but also the closest person to him. Eventually he begins to wonder whether, in fact, Katsuragi is simply using him.
As the action rises to its highest pitch, Katsuragi imposes a charge far higher than anything Kurosaki has ever paid. Will he be able to recover the money Ishigaki has stolen? Will he be able to save the company president’s daughter? And how should he face the destiny that links him to Katsuragi.

Every week, toy-shop owner Gan and his cute assistant Ai battled the evil Doronbo gang. The gang led by femme fatale Doronjo and her assistants-pig-nosed muscleman Tonzra and rat-faced mecha genius Boyacky-for pieces of the mystical skull stone, and every week the Doronbo gang failed (usually due to incompetence). Then there was a mushroom cloud, Gan and Ai did their Yatterman dance and the gang regrouped the following week to do it all over again.

Tennen Kokekko



This film takes you back to the basics of life. It re-teaches one the values of friendship, through the simplicities of serene country living.
The small country village where the film takes place is so charming, it has a school that has only 7 students, and they are almost all in different years. When a new boy comes to the village he is welcomed with love from the children. The eldest of the group 'Soyo' is simply captivating in her curiosity towards 'Hiromi' the handsome boy from Tokyo, and we see her struggle to find a balance between falling in love for the first time and holding on or letting go as it were, of her mellow and precious life with the other children; that she still keeps close to her heart.
This is a very uplifting film, and the characters make it so. A graceful, heartwarming and inspiringly told story in my eyes, and those who find themselves sometimes wishing for 'a simple life' should enjoy it just as much as I did.

Best friends Peco and Smile have been playing ping pong since they were little kids. While the unique and brazen Peco plays to win and loves the sport, the quiet and introverted Smile thinks of it as just a way to kill time with friends, but plays only because he looks up to Peco as his hero. Dragon Head



On a field trip to Kyoto, the train the students are on crashes horribly while in a tunnel, brutally killing all but three students, and horribly wounding the teacher. Teach doesn’t suffer for long however, as Nobuo (Takayuki Yamada), a bullied student, beats him to death with a bamboo sword as retribution for him not intervening when he was getting pushed around. Getting the taste for violence, Nobuo builds a little den for himself among the corpses, and begins terrorizing the other two survivorsTeru and Ako (Satoshi Tsumabuki and Sayaka, respectively).
Teru and Ako eventually escape the tunnel through a collapsed pipe, but find themselves in a lifeless wasteland, where food and water are scarce, and everything is covered in snowy white ash from some unknown catastrophe. The two students begin looking for other survivors, but soon run afoul of crazed, homicidal townsfolk who seem to think that mass suicide is the only recourse…whether Teru and Ako like it or not.

The school Festival is about to begin and Kyoko (Aki Maeda), Kei (Yu Kashii), and Nozumi (Shiori Sekine) are looking for lead vocals after their band breaks up. Kei recruits Son (Du-na Bae), a Korean exchange student who is still learning Japanese. The girls choose perform three songs from The Blue Hearts, an 80s punk rock group. They choose, Linda, Linda, Linda, An Endless Song, and My Right Hand. They have several late night practice sessions while Son tries to perfect her Japanese and Kei struggles to play the guitar better. The girls each face typical high school drama. Kei has to ask an ex-boyfriend for help. Kyoko has a crush on Kazuya (Katsuya Kobayashi) and is excited when he asks for help at the crepe stand. Son is asked out by a Japanese student who tries to learn Korean to impress her. They each face different struggles while trying to master their songs for the school festival. They almost fail to arrive when they fall asleep practicing in Studio Q. On their race to get back to the school it begins to rain and they forget instruments, fall, and Kyoko almost fails to meet her crush to tell him how she feels. They finally arrive at the school festival just in time to deliver a good performance to the excited crowd.

In bustling, 19th-century Edo, demons lurk in the shadows, disguised in human form. They are loathe to show their true faces, for even in disguise, they can easily be spotted and slain by the arrogant Demon Wardens. But then Bizan, the beautiful leader of the demons, appears to Kuninari, the captain of the Demon Wardens and smugly tells him that the rebirth of Ashura, the Queen of the Demons, has been foretold, and that mans reign over the world will soon end. This visually rich and captivating film is a direct adaptation of “Blood Gets In Your Eyes” a tremendously successful stage play from 2000 which drew on both the classic kabuki theatre and contemporary trends in Japanese pop culture. The transition to film is a remarkable one — while capitalizing on the possibilities the cinematic medium offered (particularly the flashy special effects), director Yojiro Takita maintained a firm connection to the aesthetics of the theatre. The result is a magnificent, exciting and ultimately heartbreaking spectacle.

The Machine Girl





A teenage girl shows the mob who's boss in this over-the-top blend of action, horror, and comedy. Ami (Minase Yashiro) is a seemingly ordinary Japanese schoolgirl who refuses to turn a blind eye when thugs at her school subject her little brother to needless cruelty. Ami retaliates against the vicious kids and their folks, which turns out to be a dangerous decision when she discovers some of them are connected to local gangsters. Ami is kidnapped by strong-arm men whose intimidation tactics include cutting off one of her arms, but Ami refuses to let the criminals go unpunished. With the help of a mechanic sympathetic to her cause, Ami's arm is replaced with a high-caliber machine gun, and she is transformed into a single-minded killing machine in a school uniform. Schoolteacher Akiko Kasinwagi is living along the shore of Lake Fujimi. A mysterious coffin is delivered to the house. This later opens and a pale-faced stranger emerges, attacking the groundsman Kyusaku. Kyusaku then tries to attack Akiko and at the same time Akiko’s sister Natsuko starts acting strangely. After being pursued by the white-faced man, Akiko appeals to her boyfriend Saeki, a doctor in the city, for help but Natsuko insists that Akiko is imagining everything. With nobody believing her and all those around her becoming infected by the vampire’s bite, Akiko must fight for her life as the stranger continues to come after her. Clues to dealing with the menace lie in a nightmare from her childhood.

The schoolteacher Shirkai travels to the remote north of Japan to take up a position at the Seimi girls’ boarding school. There have been mysterious happenings there, including one girl Keiko having gone missing. He has a dream in which what he later learns is Keiko appears to him. The school doctor Shimimura tells him about the legend of a vampire in the area, a Christian foreigner who, hundreds of years ago, was forced to forsake his religion and took to drinking blood. Meanwhile Keiko starts preying on the other girls at the school, turning them into vampires. Shiraki and Shimimura begin a search and realize that the head vampire is really the principal.

Tokyo Sonata is a portrait of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family. Hula Girls







In 1965 the planned closing of a coal mine in Iwaki (northeastern Japan) will put 2,000 people out of work with devastating effects on the community.
The mining company plans to build the Hawaiian Center to promote tourism, but the idea meets with resistance by the community's union families who boycott the effort. However, a few of the young women in Joban see the call for dancers to possibly provide a more promising future.
This is a story about change. Hula Girls, based on true events, takes place in a small Japanese coal mining town in the late 60s, where its town folks find that with the shifting reliance on oil from coal, the survival of their town is at stake when a major company decides to retrench and cut its headcount.

Oto-Na-Ri



Nojima Satoshi is a photographer who wants to photograph scenery but currently works for a modeling agency  where he takes picture of his best friend, a model in his 30, Shingo. One day, Satoshi decides that he no longer wants to put up with what he doesn't want to do, and sets out to go to Canada to shoot pictures of the Canadian scenery. Living next door is a woman, Nanao, also approaching her 30, who is too busy with her work at a flower shop to consider dating. One day, a man working at a convenience store nearby stops by her flower shop and confesses his feelings for her. Satoshi and Nanao know about each other's existence by the sounds their neighbor makes through the thin wall. Even though they do pay attention to the sounds next door, they actually have never met each other, or make any attempt to meet the other person. The movie tells two separate stories that happen in parallel and focuses on the lives of two people approaching their thirties, and the doubts they have about work, life, and love.

The Eel



White-collar worker Yamashita finds out that his wife has a lover visiting her when he’s away, suddenly returns home and kills her. Sad Vacation

Shogun's Shadow



Iemitsu, Tokugawa Shogun III, hates his eldest son Takechiyo; all his love is given to his younger son Tokumatsu. One day, he orders Takechiyo to an initiation rite in Yedo (today's Tokio). Takechiyo lives far away under the surveillance of Hotta Masamori, head of the Skura clan, where he was also raised. Hotta does suspect some kind of treachery, but he can not ignore the direct command of the Shogun. Therefore, he starts on his travel with Takechiyo and seven accompanying samurais. A large army under the command of Iba Shoemon, a vassal of the Shogun, attacks their night camp in the vicinity of a copper mine. Hotta dies in this first battle, but Takechiyo and the samurai manage to escape. They are chased by the army, and several skirmishes between the small force and the larger army follow.

Harakiri





Peace in 17th-century Japan causes the Shogunate's breakup of warrior clans, throwing thousands of samurai out of work and into poverty. An honorable end to such fate under the samurai code is ritual suicide, or hara-kiri (self-inflicted disembowelment). An elder warrior, Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) seeks admittance to the house of a feudal lord to commit the act. There, he learns of the fate of his son-in-law, a young samurai who sought work at the house but was instead barbarically forced to commit traditional hara-kiri in an excruciating manner with a dull bamboo blade. In flashbacks the samurai tells the tragic story of his son-in-law, and how he was forced to sell his real sword to support his sick wife and child. Tsugumo thus sets in motion a tense showdown of revenge against the house.

Samurai Zombie







A family on a road trip comes across a car accident, and pulls over to help the driver of the car. It turns out that the driver is a fugitive, who hijacks the family's car. Pointing a gun at the father's head, the fugitive commands him to step on the gas and drive off. Guided by the fugitive, they soon encounter a blockade on the highway, so they take a road into the woods. All of a sudden, the car's navigation system monitor turns blood red. The blip on the monitor seems to be moving around in a sea of blood. Then the car breaks down for no apparent reason, and they're stuck in the woods. The fugitive tells the father to go look for tools to fix the car with, while he holds the rest of the family hostage. Having no choice, the father starts walking.
Soon, the father finds a ghost village. He walks up to the top of a hill from where he can look down at the village. It looks like there's a cemetery up on the hill. He digs in the ground, and finds a rusty knife. He brings the knife up to his throat, and cuts off his own head. Blood splatters. The decapitated head falls down onto a tomb, and blood runs into the ground. After a moment, a razor-sharp Japanese sword comes out of the ground, and then an eerie samurai warrior crawls out of it. The samurai zombie chops up the father's head, then starts heading for the car. Meanwhile, the rest of the family and the fugitive have wandered into the woods. Their presence here is no accident - they were summoned. A rain of blood is about to wash everything in the village away with a curse and vengeance!

The police investigates the case, but have nothing to go on: could it all be coincidence? Then a young lady calls the police and points out a web site that could be the key to all the incidents. In addition, a mysterious child rings up detective Kuroda personally and says that another wave of suicides is imminent. Then something happens that no one had counted on...

20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope



A successor to the Japanese sci-fi blockbuster TWENTIETH CENTURY BOYS (2008) this adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's manga begins where its predecessor left off. The initial installment concerned a group of friends who shared tight bonds as children, but grew into adults with a more tenuous connection to one another, all vaguely dissatisfied and bored with life - particularly convenience store worker Kenji (Toshiaki Karasawa). As kids, they penned a book of dire prophecies, an imaginative work describing the need to save the world from an elusive cadre of villains; when the individuals grew up, the global disasters started actually happening, and it seemed incredibly bizarre, borderline inexplicable. A mysterious fellow named Friend turned up, claiming that a terrorist named Kenji was responsible for the cataclysms, but the friends all pondered Friend's real identity and his motivation for unveiling Kenji as the culprit. This time around, the year is 2015. Kenji has apparently died in a bomb explosion set by Friend in the first installment, and as a result, everyone around the world regards Friend as their savior. Unfortunately, Kenji's evil legacy lives on in the form of his niece, Kanna (Airi Taira), who continues the struggle against Friend, almost completely unaccompanied by Kenji's old allies. At about the same time, Otcho, who had been thrown into prison as one of Kenji's collaborators, breaks out of prison and treks off to find Kanna when he learns that she is about to fall prey to an assassination. Then a new Book of Prophecy turns up as a sequel to the original, with the direst of predictions in it.

Love And Honor



Shortly after assuming his post as food taster, Shinnojo loses his eyesight. The fish that was given to the head of the clan was poisoned. Prior to this, Shinnojo had held an inferior position in the ruler’s entourage. Realising that not only will he remain blind until the end of his days, but he must now relinquish his position and will need assistance for rest of his life, Shinnojo becomes dejected and melancholy. His wife, Kayo, is the only one able to prevent him from committing suicide: “I can’t imagine life without you. But, go ahead and kill yourself. If you do so, I will follow you immediately”, is her response. Touched by her loyalty, Shinnojo gives up his plan to take his own life. Shortly afterwards, Shinnojo’s uncle advises him that, since he is no longer able to work, Shinnojo should ask Kayo to go to Shimada, the influential steward of the estate, and ask for his help. As time goes by, Shinnojo begins to get used to being blind. But then one day his Aunt Ine tells him of a rumour she has heard about Kayo’s infidelity. Madly jealous, Shinnojo, who loves his wife and had always trusted her, orders his old servant, Tokuhei, to follow Kayo. Tokuhei discovers that the rumour is true. Having noticed that she was being watched, Kayo admits to having committed adultery with Shimada, explaining that the steward demanded her body in return for supporting Shinnojo. Throwing his wife out of the house, Shinnojo prepares himself for one last battle.

Sachie, from Japan, opens the “Kamome Diner” in Helsinki, Finland. The specialty menu is Onigiri rice ball or o-musubi. Another adaptation of Yoshikawa Eiji's superb Musashi about the legendary eponymous swordsman. The story is certainly worth telling and re-telling although one may doubt the wisdom of re-making a film after Inagaki's superb Samurai Trilogy starring Mifune Toshiro as Musashi. In fact, I very much doubted that it could be improved upon and despite all its nice features, this film does fall short of that worthy goal.

The unnecessary remake of Yoshikawa's awesome novel continues with the second installment in which former firebrand Takezo emerges from the Himeji Castle after three years of intense contemplation and philosophical study (getting a Ph.D. then was so much easier). The long road to becoming the legendary master swordsman Musashi has begun. Unfortunately, the journey is not going to have too many surprises: Musashi is already a pretty decent fighter.

The story is more erratic this time. Things continue from the exact end-point of the 2nd film, at the end of the battle scene, where MM considers the lessons learned. He is there, dominating the film for the first half hour, and then, apropos of nothing in particular, abruptly disappears from the film for the next hour. Of course, he is still referred frequently by most of the other characters in his absence. During this hour, some of the familiar characters are followed and at least one crucial character is introduced - the boastful young Sasaki Kojiro, with his unusually long sword.

Even less action than the previous episode, but more watchable. Quite a lot of plot and story development instead of action, which paradoxically makes the story more involved and patchy. Again, Musashi's potentially greatest opponent Kojiro jumps in and out of the story at the oddest and most coincidental moments. Musashi's great love Otsu has succumbed to madness, but she actually gets a love scene with him near the end. Yes indeed, like many Japanese men, MM is awkward at expressing love for women, and is far more comfortable expressing love for the young boy who idolizes and follows him. However, in an anguished short scene, MM confesses his love for Otsu, who then asks to be regarded as his wife. MM then sets off to beat the functionaries of a treacherous clan in an arranged duel. 73 against one. Boastful Kojiro watches, secure in the knowledge that only he is a worthy opponent.

Miyamoto Musashi: Ganryu-jima No Ketto







For anyone who hasn't seen the first four films, never fear. This episode begins with quite a long recap. But beware ! Some of the recap misrepresents the story. But no matter. Episode 5 is pretty good, in fact nearly as good as the first ep.
All the familiar characters are still there. Otsu (MM's great love), Akemi, Matahachi (his former fellow soldier), old lady Osugi (still doggedly trying to defeat MM), and even the return of Priest Takuan (the man responsible for MM's journey towards enlightenment). But most of all, the boastful, long-haired and long-sworded Kojiro Sasaki. Most of the final ep builds up to MM's battle with KS. However, the highlights for me were Takuan's brief appearances (this guy is just so likeable !) and another love scene between Otsu and MM. Curiously, there is also quite a lot of humour in this one. For instance, the scenes featuring the horse traders, who initially try to oppose MM but soon become his faithful followers, are simply hilarious.

Jarring, intermittent use of freeze frames accompanied by voice-over narration and some poorly-synched sound effects might well be tell-tale signs that this film was still incomplete when its director passed away in mid-1970. Similar to my previous encounter with Uchida's cinema – the superior A BLOODY SPEAR ON MOUNT FUJI (1955) – this film has a very deliberately paced (and, in this case, muddled) first half as it tells of the exploits of legendary warrior Musashi Miyamoto (played 16 years earlier by the great Toshiro Mifune in a celebrated trilogy of films for director Hiroshi Inakagi and the protagonist of several previous Uchida pictures) and settles on his confrontation with a rival – the owner of a secret weapon he craves – and his equally adept wife (whose brother he had killed years before). This incident takes up virtually all of the film's second half whereupon Musashi emerges triumphant by defeating the man's entire band of followers and setting husband against wife by kidnapping their little son.

Akihabara is a Tokyo district full of mangas, anime, electronics, video games, figurines, etc. It is a place that gathers fanatics of such themes, people who are commonly referred to as otaku.
Page, Box, Akira, Taiko, Daruma, and Izumu are six otaku each with his/her own troubles and sought relief through a website called "Yui's Lifeguard."
When site owner Yui died of a mysterious death, the six - each is an expert in their own field - gathered to form " ", a "trouble shooter" group that vows to protect Akihabara and solve the problems of its inhabitants.

Two kids meet near a floodgate after school. Yu is a shy 17 year old girl who sits down next to Yosuke as he plays his guitar. Yosuke recently gave up playing sports and has devoted himself to playing the guitar. He only plays a few lines over and over, as he tries to make a song from what he feels. Their relationship progresses tentatively as they both have difficulty in expressing their feelings and thoughts. One day Yu takes the initiative and kisses Yosuke. Yosuke responds by picking up his guitar and going home. Years later Yu wonders, “Why did I cry? Why didn’t I stop crying? Why?”..while Yosuke wonders “Why did I run away from you that time?”
Fast forward seventeen years later. They haven’t seen each since their days in high school and now have moved on with their separate and empty lives. That is until one day they randomly meet during an audition. They agree to go out together after work for drinks. As the evening turns into the early morning, they are still awake sharing memories of their high school days. After 17 years Yosuke finally kisses Yu. Yu starts to cry again and they soon go to visit her older sister.
The next day Yosuke decides to call Yu and make good on a promise he made to her 17 years ago, that is he would play her his song when it is completed. Yu agrees to meet him again and Yosuke goes home to get his acoustic guitar. While on his way to meet Yu, fate deals a strange twist to their plans, perhaps this will be the moment where they can finally say “Sukida.”

Oneechanbara





Who doesn't love the vastly successful Japanese video game The Oneechanbara? You got a hot sexy bikini cowgirl killing zombies? Add some extra characters for each iteration of the game series and its gets even better. (Im sure the new Wii version makes slicing zombies heads off all the more physically exertive so as to stay in physical parity with the main character who seems quite fit.
Now the plot of the video game is pretty slim to none, so the movie expands on this by adding SOME plot. Some back-story on the characters is good, as well as a motivation to kill zombies and why of course there ARE zombies running amok. But nowhere does anyone ever bother to mention why she is always wearing a bikini and cowboy hat. Perhaps there is a vague "Fistfull of Dollars"/"Galaxy Express 999" reference here, but still, for those of us probing the sartorial functions of Oneechanbara's battle dress, I guess we should just sit back and enjoy it without asking such pointless questions.
The film action then is very much like the game action and therefore lots of fun. The fight scenes are the highlights and really shine. The pathos and drama are pretty standard but necessary. The whole picture tho is quite low budget and lacking any sort of quality acting talent. I believe the main actress was either a DVD pinup idol or a soft core porn star, so we'll just say she's got a good future if the movie turns franchise. Maybe they'll explain more in a sequel. In the meantime, hell, she's a hot zombie killing bikini girl!

In the late Tokugawa period, the Edo government is using Spies from Iga Province to cause the downfall of innocent provincial Daimyo. The Shogun needs to claim the assets of fallen clans in order to boost the failing economies of Edo. The Ninjahunters, jesting Sunlight or Tadanoshi Unui (Ryuhei Uchida) & gaunt Moonlight or Denosuke Kusaba (Mikeo Narita), are led by a brooding fellow named Jubei Muroto. These three ronin are not your normal ornery ruffians who are looking for a drink, a broad and someone to jab a sword into, but are in fact former samurai who, rather than follow their destroyed fiefs and murdered masters into death via seppuku, have dedicated their combined sword prowess to stopping the government from raping its daimyos for valuable resources. It turns out that in the Tokugawa era's twilight years, one of the tools that the shogunate would screw their daimyos with would be the ninja-sometimes referred to as 'shadows'. The 'shadows' would manipulate the daimyos by planting incriminating anti-shogunate evidence (therefore they could be taken over under the ruse of being treasonous or mutinous), by stealing valuable documents (asserting a fiefdom's inalienable right of existence), or by the assassination of key political figures and lords. In a sense, the Shadow Hunters act as a kind of firefighter to the Tokugawa shogunate's ninja bad guys; moving from land to land, offering their swords and ridding Japan of the accursed 'shadows' that destroyed their own clans.

The three Shadow Hunters return for another round of Ninja killing. As the film opens, the three Hunters are apart but each is attacked by a "Kunoichi", a beautiful, deadly female Ninja. After each has dispatched with the Kunoichi, they reunite for another job thwarting shadows at the behest of a clan. Though its use has been outlawed, a mountain clan has a prized cannon that was used in the civil war. Recently, they have melted it down to make a new and more deadly weapon, even though doing so is in direct defiance of the current Shogun's orders. The Shadow Hunters must retrieve the new cannon from the summit of the mountain and return it to the village before the Shogun's inspectors arrive. Unbeknownst to the trio, Domoto Makaku, leader of the Shogun's shadows, is personally coming to make sure that their mission fails. It will take more than brute strength and swords to get the cannon down the mountain and the Hunters pull out all the stops to complete the mission they've been assigned.

Yoru No Onnatachi



Yoru no Onnatachi (Women of the Night) was one of three Kenji Mizoguchi films entered into competition at the 1957 Venice Film Festival. Like the other two Mizoguchi efforts (Uwasa no Onna, Mushashino Ujin), the film was several years old; in this case, it was completed in 1948. Like many of the director's best films, Yoru no Onnatachi is a pro-feminist tract, set principally in a Japanese "bagnio", or legalized brothel. The story centers around two sisters who are forced into prostitution to survive. The film's climax takes place in a "kangaroo court" presided over by whores, wherein the two women are accused of being traitors to their class.

Burst City is essentially a feature length punk rock music clip. The film is set in a kind of post-apocalyptic Japan where everyone is a punk, a freak or a brutal cop. There are non-stop riots in the streets, non-stop punk concerts, non-stop gang warfare, non-stop police brutality and non-stop car chases. This film is one hell of a wild ride and it left me feeling spun. The soundtrack is made up entirely of awesome Japanese punk rock and fits the images perfectly.

A recent accident has left Satoru Iwamoto, an elementary school student, temporarily wheelchair-ridden. In addition, the recent loss of his mother has thrown Satoru into a reclusive state, locking himself from the outside world. However, in an effort to help Satoru recover from his injuries, his father, Kaoru, has designed a remote-controlled robot that will go to school in his place and allow him to interact with people and do normal things.
The robot, "piloted" by Satoru from a large control terminal in his room, is nicknamed 'Hinokio' by his classmates. Hinokio is mostly admired by his fellow students, and they together start a generally normal year of school. But the story soon dwells more on Satoru, himself, as he rediscovers love and friendship through classmate Jun Kudo and also his own father.

Populating the world on the eve of the twentieth century, menaced by a science-obsessed era and trying to ensure their survival, the Mushi cast their malevolent spell on humans and nature alike. An odd murder case that only targets the person whose last name is "SATO" was happening in Japan. Meanwhile, high school student SATO Tsubasa winds up in a parallel world during a fight with gangster. Everything seemed the same, but his friends, classmates were somehow different from who they used to be.
Tsubasa could not comprehend what was happening around him, but when he sees a girl getting killed in front of him by a persuer, he finds out that he is now in a world where the Lord of the land plays a fatal game of "tag".
The real chasing game (Onigokko) that targets people named "SATO". If you get clear away for few hours a day when the game is on going, and succeeds in running away for a week in total, any wish you have comes true. Tsubasa eventually notices that the parallel world is linked to the real world, killing same person who has already been killed in the parallel world. And when the siren sounds to signify that ONIGOKKO has begun, Tsubasa races to protect his sister who of course has the same last name
