Line of Fire - Mons 1914
The small British Expeditionary Force, moving up into Belgium on the left flank of the French 5th Army, met with the full weight of the German 1st Army advancing towards Paris under the Schlieffen Plan. A short but intense fire fight - where the British caused heavy casualties to the thick masses of enemy infantry - was followed by a British withdrawal out of the canal salient. This manoeuvre was made more urgent by news that the French Army on the right flank was in retreat.
A number of military historians recount the flow of battle, with film of the present day Belgian town and countryside, some historic footage, and occasional use of graphic maps of the battle lines. Mons, of course, is that great British enigma, a defeat turned into victory. The British Expeditionary Force, which landed on the Continent in 1914 and was immediately launched into Belgium to protect Paris from a swinging German flanking manoeuvre, found itself holding the Mons salient against an overwhelming assault. Over thirteen days it was forced to retreat over 200 miles. The troops - professional soldiers and reservists, not new recruits - retired in good order, fighting every step of the way. Retreat in the face of the enemy is the most difficult of military actions.
