“ The Battle of the Somme is a 1916 British documentary and propaganda film. Shot by two official cinematographers, Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell, the film depicts the British Army's preparations for, and the early stages of, the battle of the Somme. Premiered in London on 10 August 1916 and released generally on 21 August, while the battle continued in France, the film gave a very graphic depiction of trench warfare, showing dead and wounded British and German soldiers. The film was a massive success, selling some twenty million tickets in its first six weeks of release in Britain. That would equal about half the then population of Britain (43 million). It has been said that this record was not broken before the release of Star Wars 60 years later. It was later distributed in eighteen other countries. Preserved in the film archive of the Imperial War Museum since 1922, the film was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2005. The Battle of the Somme remains significant today as an early example of film propaganda technique, as an historical record of the battle, and as a frequent source of footage illustrating the First World War. The film has since been digitally restored and released on DVD in 2008 offering a startling improvement on previously released versions. It is available with a choice of three soundtracks (included):
•An audio commentary (in English) by Robert Smither, Keeper of the IWM's Filb & Photograph Archives.
•A newly commissioned orchestral score, composed by Laura Rossi and performed by the Philarmonia Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine.
•A recreation of the medley, of light classics, folk tunes, popular songs and military music, recommended as an accompaniment to the 1916 release, performed by a small ensemble led by Stephen Horne."
