Dersu Uzala (1974)
info http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071411/
Kurosawa has long been interested in exploring the meaning of technological progress, and its consequences for definition of humanity, the environment, and relationships between people. Although not as blunt as DREAMS, DERSU UZALA is a rather strong, if unoriginal, statement of Kurosawa's faith that harmony with nature is a prerequisite for humanity, and that friendship knows no bounds except those that we put on it. The film is more than a simple statement, though. Kurosawa, depressed after the failure of his previous film, DODES'KA-DEN, attempted to commit suicide. When this didn't work out, thank the deity you believe in, he had to go to the USSR to direct this film.
Based on the true story from the diaries of Vladimir Arseniev, the film tells the story of two people: Captain Arseniev (Yuri Solomin), head of a Russian survey party in the depth of Siberia, and Dersu Uzala (Maksim Munzuk), a native Goldi hunter, who becomes their guide. The seemingly simple backwoods uncivilized native quickly wins over the Russians with his skill, compassion, and care. There are several scenes that would melt the heart of any Park Ranger. I particularly loved the one where he repairs the hut and leaves provisions for other travelers that may happen to come upon the place. He also scolds the Russians for needlessly wasting material. One can't help but think about the environment today. It goes beyond question that the mindless ruin perpetrated by commercial interests is the worst offender, but senseless people also damage it for recreation (all those careless idiots with mountain-bikes and ATVs)! Compare with Dersu, who becomes depressed after killing a tiger needlessly (although it did seem it was in self-defense). When the old hunter's sight fails him, he goes to "the city", to live with Arseniev's family. Predictably, he is quite unhappy there, and decides to leave.
One of the most impressive elements of this film is the cinematography. Kurosawa is always grand, but this time he approaches genius. Who would have thought that the inhospitable Siberian taiga can be so enchanting? Certainly not this jaded reviewer. I was in the dark, much like the Russian surveyors, and it did take Dersu Uzala to uncover the hidden beauty. This is a wild region, unpredictable and deadly for the uninitiated. The scene with the night storm, where Dersu Uzala saves Arseniev (and himself), was breathtaking
