iPhone 3G / 3GS
Instructions for Mac and Windows
How To Unlock Your iPhone 3G / 3GS
NOTE: We strongly suggest you read through all the steps before starting. We
also recommend you print these instructions. It will be easier to follow from a
printed copy.
Step 1
Backup / Sync your iPhone.
Step 2
If you have not already installed iTunes 8.2, install it now. You can download it
from the official Apple website. After installation, you may be asked to restart
your computer. If asked, restart your computer.
Step 3
Turn your iPhone ON and plug it into your computer with the USB cable that
came with your iPhone when you purchased it. Open iTunes.
Step 4
If you have not already upgraded your iPhone to Software Version 3.0, iTunes
will ask you if you want to upgrade. Upgrade your iPhone to Software Version 3.0
by following the instructions on-screen. Do not Sync or ʻRestore from back-upʼ
after upgrading.
Step 5
With iTunes still open and your iPhone still connected to your computer, turn your
iPhone OFF.
1. Press and hold the 'Home' button and the 'Sleep/Wake' button at the same
time.
2. After exactly 10 seconds, release the 'Sleep/Wake' button. Continue holding
the 'Home' button.
3. After 20 seconds (or when iTunes detects your phone in Recovery mode),
release the 'Home' button.
NOTE: Your iPhone should display a black screen. If it turns on, or if it displays
the "Connect to iTunes" logo, turn it off (press and hold both buttons for 10 to 20
seconds) and try again. It may take a few attempts to successfully do this.
How To Unlock Your iPhone 3G / 3GS
Step 6
In iTunes, click 'Restore and Update' and restore again to the latest firmware 3.0.
Do not Sync or ʻRestore from back-upʼ after restoring.
Step 7
On your desktop, create a folder and name it ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ.
Step 8 (Windows)
If you are on a Windows-based computer, download the following file and place it
in the ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ folder you just created:
http://xyz/unlock/redsn0w-win_0.8.zip
Extract the file and copy the ʻredsn0w.exeʼ application to the ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ
folder.
Step 8 (Mac)
If you are on a Mac computer, download the following file and place it in the
ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ folder you just created:
http://xyz/unlock/redsn0w-mac_0.8.zip
Extract the file and copy the ʻredsn0wʼ application to the ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ folder.
Step 9 (Windows)
Click the ‘Start’ button, and then click ‘Run’, in the box, type:
%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Step 9 (Mac)
Open the folder located at:
\Users\Your Username\Library\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Step 10
Copy the ʻiPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipswʼ file to the ʻiPhoneUnlockʼ folder
you created earlier.
Step 11
With your iPhone still connected to your computer, launch the ʻredsn0wʼ
application.
Step 12
Once ʻredsn0wʼ is open, click the ʻBrowseʼ button and located the large ʻ.ipswʼ file
you copied earlier. The application will verify the validity of this file. Once it has
been verified, click the ʻNextʼ button.
Step 13
Make sure ʻInstall Cydiaʼ is checked, then click the ʻNextʼ button.
Step 14
Follow the on-screen instructions to turn off your iPhone. Click the ʻNextʼ button.
Step 15
You will be guided to put your iPhone in DFU mode. Follow the instructions onscreen
carefully.
Step 16
Once in DFU mode the application will send information to your iPhone. Once
done, click the ʻFinishʼ button. Your iPhone will reboot automatically. DO NOT
INTERRUPT IT. This process will take about 5 minutes.
Step 17
Launch the Cydia application on your iPhone.
Step 18
At the bottom of the screen, tap ʻManageʼ.
Step 19
Tap the ʻSourcesʼ icon.
Step 20
Tap the ʻEditʼ button at the top right corner.
Step 21
Tap the ʻAddʼ button at the top left corner.
Step 22
When prompted to enter an URL, enter:
Then tap the ʻAdd Sourceʼ button.
NOTE: ʻsnowʼ is written with the digit zero instead of the letter O.
Step 23
Once the source has been added, press the ʻReturn to Cydiaʼ button at the
bottom of the screen.
Step 24
Tap the ʻDoneʼ button at the top right corner.
Step 25
Tap to select the source you have just added: repo666.ultrasn0w.com.
Step 26
Tap to select the ʻultrasn0wʼ package.
Step 27
Tap the ʻInstallʼ button at the top right corner.
Step 28
Tap the ʻConfirmʼ button at the top right corner.
Step 29
After a successful installation, tap the ʻReturn to Cydiaʼ button at the bottom of
the screen.
Step 30
Press the Home button on your iPhone to quit the Cydia application.
Step 31
Power OFF your iPhone and then power it ON again.
Congratulations, your iPhone 3G is now unlocked!

TROUBLESHOOTING
Make sure you are running iPhone Software Version 3.0.
Go to ʻSettingsʼ, then ʻGeneralʼ, then ʻResetʼ, and reset the network settings.
Try switching 3G off in the iPhone settings.
Disable any SIM PIN you may have.
If you donʼt see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, remove the SIM
card, wait 10 seconds, re-insert the SIM card and wait another 15 seconds.
In Settings, try switching ʻAirplane Modeʼ ON, then OFF again.
Error when opening redsn0w.exe
Please download and install the latest update of .NET Framework from Microsoft
available here:
Problem downloading the files
Please verify that you have typed the address correctly. Most of the time the
problem is due to a space in the middle of the address or another typo.
If the problem persists, wait a few minutes and try again. |
