Although famous military planes, such as the de-Havilland bomber and the Sopwith Camel, were developed for use in the First World War, it was WWII that saw the ascent of aerial bombardment as a supreme fighting tactic.
America, Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Russia and Italy all developed military planes and over 40 different bomber and attack planes were created from 1939 to 1945.
The Vietnam War saw the next significant use of airplane technology for military purposes, with America fighting a large proportion of its war against the Vietcong from the air. The US government spent millions of dollars developing air technology, as the Vietcong fought Guerrilla-style on the ground and used their detailed local knowledge to defeat American soldiers in swamp and jungle.
The US military adopted a strategy of widespread blanket-bombing and dropped between three and four times the amount of bombs used against Germany and Japan in WWI while engaged in the Vietnam war.
The race to create stronger, faster and more powerful military strike planes continues today and into the future. Some planes, such as the F-15, have proven their capability in the military arena time and again. The F-15 has not been shot down in 30 years of one-on-one combat. Although the first F-15 flight was made in 1972, the plane is still in use in combat zones today.
The infamous Stealth Bomber is so-called because it is designed to steal into enemy territory without being detected by radar. The plane was developed by the US military as a replacement for the Second World War’s B-52 bomber and is controlled by a mixture of pilot and computer. The Stealth Bomber can fly 11,500 miles without refuelling.
Finally - into the future of strike planes. Europe’s Eurofighter Typhoon is currently in development. This single-seat fighter plane is precision-designed to work in close combat and when the target is beyond visual range. Euro Fighter Typhoon pilots have to wear special suits that encourage the body’s blood flow, as handling this 21st century plane puts the human body under immense pressure.
