Christopher Titus hasn’t had an easy life, having been born to an alcoholic father who’s gone through five wives, and a brilliant but manic-depressive/schizophrenic mother who eventually killed herself. Titus fell into a bonfire while drunk at the age of 17 and was never part of the “cool crowd.” If you’re a fan of his work you’ve heard his stand-up and watched his show Titus on FOX from 2000 to 2002.
Titus has always used his life as part of his act; it shows how messed up his life was and how he’s dealt with it. The one bright spot to his life seemed to be his wife, but even that has ended in divorce and is the focus of his latest act, “Love is Evol.” Evol is love spelled backwards, but when Titus pronounces it, he makes it sound like "evil."
Titus never pulls his punches and lets everyone know exactly what happened that led to the end of the marriage, and what went on during the divorce. He is self-deprecating and not afraid to tell it like it is, even making himself the butt of his jokes. In his act he talks about all types of relationships, including his parents' and how dysfunctional it was, including the night he was conceived. Titus rants for a bit, and then talks about his current relationship and how much of a dork he is, and the meeting that went down between her father, who is a Vietnam vet, and himself. Anyone who’s a fan has heard part of this act either from his show or CDs but this new act puts the material into a new context.
One of the best things about this DVD is its runtime. The DVD is 85 minutes long; when the special aired on Comedy Central it was about 42 minutes, so you get double the material here. The performance is very funny and I don’t know what they would have cut to whittle it down to 42 minutes; plus here it’s uncensored, so you get to hear the stories as Titus intended you to hear them and would have if you saw him live.
Extras include “Titus vs. Cupid,” a quick featurette about the photo shoot for the DVD cover, and “Fans Speak: Love on the Rocks,” which has fans talking about their worst break-ups/relationships which can be fun although some stories are cringe-worthy. Finally there’s “Countdown to V-Day” which has Christopher Titus giving the viewer advice on what to do from 14 days before Valentine’s Day to the actual day, where if you haven’t done anything yet, you should just panic.
Christopher Titus: Love is Evol is funny and if you have the chance to see him live, do it. I look forward to his next special, so to paraphrase his dad: “What are you waiting for? Go get the DVD and don’t be a wussy!”
