După ce comite accidental o crimă, Bill (Richard Gere - Chicago, Shall We Dance?), un ajutor de la fermă cu temperament năvalnic, fuge în Texas cu iubita lui, Abby (Brooke Adams), și sora lui mai mică. Bill și Abby se dau drept frate și soră, pentru a evita ca străinii să le pună întrebări despre trecutul lor. Ei găsesc de lucru la ferma unui cultivator de grâu (Sam Shepard - The Notebook), dar înainte ca strânsul recoltei să se încheie, bogatul fermier se îndrăgostește de Abby. El o roagă să îl ia de bărbat, iar Bill o îndeamnă să accepte, dar numai fiindcă fermierul este grav bolnav și mai are doar un an de trăit. Cei doi vor să pună mâna pe moștenire, dar planurile lor sunt date peste cap când starea de sănătate a fermierului se îmbunătățește în mod neașteptat. Cei trei se confruntă acum cu probleme legate de gelozie, furie și devotament, prizonieri ai multor emoții confuze, într-o situație extrem de schimbătoare.
