Simon the Sorcerer 4: Chaos Happens Adventure through the Magic World as Simon the Sorceror as you try to take care of your mischievous doppleganger for your lady-friend, Alix.
PROCYON released their 116th release a while ago: a CloneDVD of Simon The Sorcerer 4. This adventure is slightly mysterious despite its legendary predecessors - it was originally released almost a year ago in Germany, but the English version hasn’t been published yet. Now it seems happening, but the website of official distributor still doesn’t show any info about the English version. Well, this is a real deal so let’s not overanalyze and just download. Be sure to carefully read through the NFO about the installation process.
Simon the Sorcerer 4: Chaos Happens is set some years after Simon’s last adventure in the Magic World. During a fight over the TV remote with his younger brother, Simon is knocked unconscious. In the dream that follows he has a vision of Alix, his lady-friend from the Magic World. She tells him a “Simon” doppelganger is causing all kinds of trouble in her world. After Simon wakes up he doesn’t know what to make of it. Was it just a dream or is there more? He wastes no time at all and fires up his magic wardrobe to get to the bottom of it.
To describe Simon the Sorcerer as being one the classic point and click adventure series from the genre’s golden era is perhaps a little too charitable. While it’s certainly true that the first two games were present during the PC’s early days, not to mention the never-beaten Amiga era, chances are that starting a conversation with a fellow adventure nut will quickly lead to the topic changing to the likes of Beneath A Steel Sky or Day Of The Tentacle. After the third instalment made a complete hash of going 3D, the series has now gone full circle.
Simon the Sorcerer 4: Chaos Happens (we’re no linguists, but perhaps “chaos” rhymes with “shit” in its native German) sees the pubescent Simon arguing with his pre-pubescent brother, before a whack to the head prompts him to have a vision calling him back to the magic world. A quick trip in his dimension-travelling wardrobe later sees Simon back in his familiar wizard’s garb in the land of fantasy, where a bird with tits so gigantic that she’s probably got a wizard’s sleeve of her own slaps him around the face and storms off in a huff. The reasons behind this bizarre series of opening events turn out to revolve around a duplicate of Simon who’s been doing the backward-folk good deeds. This, for reasons which are never actually explained, upsets Simon, and so the motivation, for what it’s worth, is set.
Despite failing to tick an alarming number of boxes when it comes to game mechanism basics, such as giving you the option to tweak the screen resolution or fiddle with effects if your machine’s a piece of old crap, the engine is actually quite competent. The backgrounds for each scene are pleasingly lush and the art itself is surprising good looking, making for an enjoyable backdrop to play against. The interface is as simple as it should be, with a pop up inventory bar at the bottom of the screen giving easy access to the items you’ll pilfer along the way. We’ll even go so far as to take our wizard’s hats off to the developers for resisting the all too common urge to include pixel hunts, as the interactive objects are all big and pronounced enough to be spotted during your first visit to each location. The only real annoyance in terms of the controls lies in the fact that the cursor always turns into an arrow whenever someone’s speaking, meaning you can’t get on with the often more interesting task of sweeping around the screen looking for highlights.
One of the reasons that this is in fact such a problem is because when the characters are talking, there’s a good chance that what they’ll be saying is complete drivel. The script is truly dire, with the few stabs it makes at humour missing its mark so widely that it actually comes close to taking your eye out. Clearly the writers were hoping that Simon would be a chirpy and slightly sarcastic wit guiding you through the hackneyed scenarios (which the game does willingly hold its hands up to), but what they’ve actually been left with is an irritatingly nasal American who’s been under the impression that he can do comedy since he once made a retarded kid chuckle back at school. The marked lack of quality in the script is laid absolutely bare as every single item you can click on seemingly results in a minute-long speech that goes absolutely nowhere via the port of banality.
* Official follow up of one of the most popular adventure games * Story full of plot twists, lots of unique characters and pitch black humor. * Hundreds of engaging and mind boggling puzzles * Easy to use logbook for optimal overview of all quests * Great looking graphics and classic controls will thrill both young and old.
