Sex and sunlight are on ample display in Betty Blue, director Jean-Jacques Beineix's passionate look at mad love. (Every French director is contractually required to make at least one movie about l'amour fou.) It begins at the seashore, where handyman and failed novelist Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) has his life electrified by Betty, a woman whose sense of abandon frequently tips over into the pathological. --Robert Horton - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

This was the role that introduced gap-toothed, voluptuous Beatrice Dalle to the world, and neither Dalle nor the world has ever quite recovered. Traces of Beineix's precious Diva are still present, though this is a darker and more memorable ride, especially in the three-hour "version integrale" that restores an hour of footage. Its copious nude scenes are a drawing card, but stick around for the age-old alchemy of life translated into art. Gabriel Yared's score is a favorite of movie-soundtrack mavens, especially its haunting piano theme. --Robert Horton - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

In French film, "Betty Blue," Betty moves in with her new boyfriend, Zorg, after losing her job as a waitress. They've only known each other for a week, but Zorg doesn't hesitate when he senses Betty's desperation. Zorg is a handyman at a drab coastal resort, and he has a house provided by his employer. Betty moves in, and the arrangement seems beneficial for everyone.

Zorg is the envy of the other men who express their appreciation for the luscious Betty. While, at first, their life together seems idyllic, a sense of doom hangs over Betty. She expresses a certain restless discontent with life, and she experiences violent and volatile mood swings. When she discovers that Zorg has written a novel, Betty becomes obsessed with the idea of publication.

Zorg and Betty ditch the coastal resort in typical destructive fashion, and take up residence with Lisa, a friend of Betty's who owns a dilapidated old hotel. Betty painstakingly begins typing all the pages of Zorg's novel, but she's unable to cope with the rejection slips--especially one that says "I return this nauseating flower you call a novel." Betty's mood swings become increasingly more dangerous, and soon it's clear that Zorg is protecting Betty from society's reactions to her violence, but he's also protecting Betty from herself. Lisa's dapper boyfriend, Eddy--the pizza restaurant owner whose silk dressing gowns make him look like a bantam weight boxer--seems to understand Zorg's problem, and he offers help.

Betty Blue is not a traditional love story--it's about two people with problems who try to salvage one another through their love. Zorg realizes that Betty is a terrific responsibility, but he also considers that she is the very best thing in his life. He is passionately in love with Betty, and he will do whatever is necessary to protect her. As Betty's mental state declines, their relationship becomes increasingly more touching and desperate.

"Betty Blue" is a very long film, and it's squished all on one LP tape. The quality isn't spectacular, and sometimes it was difficult to read the subtitles. While the film does have some scenes of comic relief (the bandit "Josephine," for example), the story is serious, thought-provoking, and, for some, possibly depressing. "Betty Blue" is loaded with sex and nudity (both male and female), and it's not a film for the kiddies or for the easily depressed--displacedhuman.
