“One of the key films of the 1970s, John Boorman's Deliverance is a nightmarish adaptation of poet-novelist James Dickey's book about various kinds of survival in modern America. The story concerns four Atlanta businessmen of various male stripe: Jon Voight's character is a reflective, civilized fellow, Burt Reynolds plays a strapping hunter-gatherer in urban clothes, Ned Beatty is a sweaty, weak-willed boy-man, and Ronny Cox essays a spirited, neighborly type. Together they decide to answer the ancient call of men testing themselves against the elements and set out on a treacherous ride on the rapids of an Appalachian river. What they don't understand until it is too late is that they have ventured into Dickey's variation on the American underbelly, a wild, lawless, dangerous (and dangerously inbred) place isolated from the gloss of the late 20th century. In short order, the four men dig deep into their own suppressed primitiveness, defending themselves against armed cretins, facing the shock of real death on their carefully planned, death-defying adventure, and then squarely facing the suspicions of authority over their concealed actions. Boorman, a master teller of stories about individuals on peculiarly mythical journeys, does a terrifying and beautiful job of revealing the complexity of private and collective character--the way one can never be the same after glimpsing the sharp-clawed survivor in one's soul.

John Boorman's seminal masterpiece still holds up 35 years later. Back in a time when Hollywood wasn't obsessed with uber-comercialism in the films they produced, author James Dickey adapted his own novel with director John Boorman at the helm. The end result is Deliverance: the infamous man versus nature allegory that still remains every bit as harrowing and horrifying as it did when it was first released in 1972. In case you don't know the story, Deliverance revolves around four "city boy" friends: Ed (Jon Voight), Lewis (Burt Reynolds), Bobby (Ned Beatty), and Drew (Ronny Cox); whose trip down the treacherous Georgia river turns into an incredibly violent nightmare when they run afoul of a couple backwoods hillbillies. What happens next turns into a fight for survival, that will test all of them in ways they never thought possible... It's incredibly rare that a film can hold up for all these years and not look dated, and it's even more rare that it can remain this powerful.

Filmul lui Boorman este o povestire cu accente psihologice a calatoriei a patru camarazi de-a lungul unui rau din padurile Georgiei. La sugestia lui Iron John Lewis (Burt Reynolds), camarazii sai - nu mai putin lipsiti de spiritul aventurii - Ed (Jon Voight), Bobby (Ned Beatty) si Drew (Ronny Cox) hotarasc sa se aventureze cu o canoe in lungul unui rau inainte ca un proiect ecologic sa ruineze complet zona. Lucrurile se schimba chiar de a doua zi, cand doi membri ai echipajului – Bobby si Ed- decid sa se separe de ceilalti.
Doi vanatori de munte necunoscuti insa ii ataca pe cei doi. Lewis si Drew ii salveaza, dar atacul schimba irevocabil soarta calatoriei.
Ca un veritabil film al anilor 70, si acesta reuseste sa pondereze prin transpunerea cinematografica dezlantuirile violente si definitia barbatiei, idei tot mai presante in acea perioada de escaladare a a violentelor si a discriminarilor sexuale.
Realismul actiunilor si jocul actoricesc a fost foarte apreciat de critici, filmul fiind nominalizat la trei premii Oscar, inclusiv Cel mai Bun film, Cea mai Buna Regie, si Cel mai bun Scenariu adaptat.
Eliberarea este un film care vorbeste despre anxietatile contemporane ale oamenilor fata de viata de zi cu zi, reliefate in cele mai bune (sau nu) circumstante.
