In this compelling tale of incestuous obsession, a teenage brother and sister create an intense, private world in their untidy shared single room. The intrusion of outsiders provokes tragedy. A hauntingly atmospheric film of Jean Cocteau's claustrophobic hothouse novel, for which he also wrote the screenplay. To his second film Melville contributed clear-eyed direction, the then-novel use of classical music for the score and the inspired casting of Renée Cosima in a dual role and from Nicole Stéphane Melville extracted an intense performance as the fiercely watchful sister.
