The second of Ozu's war-era films, and the first to feature Chishu Ryu in the leading role. This film starts with the story of a teacher and his young son. After one of the students under Ryu's care drowns on a school outing, the father resigns as a teacher due to his "failure". Father and son then must split up, the son to go to middle school and Ryu to work in to Tokyo to pay for his son's education. Even when the son is grown - and teaching in an agricultural college - the two remain separated - except for very rare, very short visits - due to Ryu's fanatic devotion to duty, an attitude he presses on his son as well.
A quietly moving 1942 Japanse feature by Yasujiro Ozu chronicling the mutual devotion of a father (Chishu Ryu, in another of his exquisite, subtle performances) and his son over a 13-year period--from the father's resignation from teaching to his peaceful, triumphant death and the son's subsequent marriage. En una ciudad de provincia, un profesor viudo vive una vida modesta con su único hijo. En un viaje escolar, un alumno se ahoga en un lago. El profesor asume la responsabilidad del accidente y debe dimitir. Abandona la ciudad con su hijo para trasladarse a su población natal. Durante el viaje, padre e hijo discuten sobre la vida, de su futuro. Se establece una relación al mismo tiempo cercana y distante entre ellos. Un día, mientras pescan juntos, el padre anuncia a su hijo que lo envía a estudiar a un colegio internado y que de ahora en adelante vivirán distantes el uno del otro.

Un enseignant, veuf, vit seul avec son fils unique. Lors d'un voyage scolaire, un accident survient, provoquant la mort d'un de ses élèves. Assumant ses responsabilités, il décide de démissionner et se retire dans sa campagne natale avec son fils. Au grand désespoir du jeune garçon, son père lui annonce que, pour qu’il puisse mener à bien ses études, ils vont devoir se séparer. Plusieurs années s’écoulent : le père travaille à Tokyo en tant que bureaucrate, tandis que son fils exerce à son tour comme professeur dans une petite ville. Leurs retrouvailles se font rares mais émouvantes...
