Celle-ci est sous la protection de Dédé pour qui elle est son gagne-pain. Celui-ci la pousse à entretenir une relation avec Legrand, qui en vient à l'entretenir...

“Premier film parlant de Renoir, La chienne est aussi son premier grand film. Quand beaucoup de cinéastes sacrifient alors les mouvements de caméra, lourd et parfois bruyants, à la prise de son (la piste sonore du film a été restaurée en 1997), Renoir fait preuve d'une extrême virtuosité.
Renoir teinte encore ici son anarchisme d'un naturalisme assez visible. Il s'orientera ensuite plus nettement vers des annotations réalistes notamment avec Boudu sauvé des eaux dont La chienne partage la thématique.
