During WW2 a British aircraft is shot down and crashes in Nazi held territory. The Germans capture the only survivor, an American General, and take him to the nearest SS headquarters. Unknown to the Germans the General has full knowledge of the D-Day operation. The British decide that the General must not be allowed to divulge any details of the Normandy landing at all cost and order Major John Smith to lead a crack commando team to rescue him. Amongst the team is an American Ranger, Lieutenant Schaffer, who is puzzled by his inclusion in an all British operation. When one of the team dies after the parachute drop, Schaffer suspects that Smith's mission has a much more secret objective

Inspirat din cel de-al doilea razboi mondial, acest film a devenit unul dintre cele mai cunoscute filme de razboi realizate vreodata. O trupa de comando trebuie sa elibereze un general american dintr-un castel aflat in muntii Alpi.

Rezumat:
Misiunea este clara. Urca-te. Ia-l pe general. Iesi. Trupelor de comando care au fost insarcinate cu eliberarea unui general american dintr-o fortareata din munti trebuia sa li se spuna sa nu aiba incredere in nimic - inclusiv in ordinele primite.
Richard Burton si Clint Eastwood ajung acolo unde se avanta vulturii in acest thriller plin de schimbari de situatie despre cel de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, scris de un maestru al filmelor de actiune - Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra) si regizat de Brian G. Hutton (Kelly's Heroes). Cunoscut pentru rolurile sale dramatice, Burton se avanta in focul luptei cu eficienta maxima. Iar prezenta de spirit si calmul lui Eastwood aduc pe ecran o multitudine de secvente incendiare. Acest film a devenit cel mai bun film al lui Eastwood de atunci si cel mai bine vandut al casei de productie din acel an.
