Beautiful Minds - The Savants
Beautiful Minds approaches the huge scientific field of Brain research through the most interesting and entertaining 'research projects': The Savants. Currently, there are around 100 recognised savants with genius-like talents worldwide. For all brain researchers, the Savants are a fascinating window into the brain. Can we find a way to cure our forgetfulness? What would life be like if we did not forget anymore? Can creativity be learnt? It would seem so, otherwise, how can Savants perform things which they have never learnt before?
New York brain scientist Elkohonon Goldberg says: 'Under normal conditions you would not call them Savants - you would them Genius'.
Howard Potter was discovered when he started counting peas. He was then a nine year old boy, and when he was sitting at the table for dinner he complained about his brother Duncan having two peas more on his plate. As he insisted on it so vigorously, his parents started to count pea by pea. Howard was right and he never failed with his estimations ever since.
There is no doubt that Brain Sciences are the most intriguing and most up-to-date field of science of today. Savants are the most mysterious yet the most entertaining subjects of the neuro-scientists. Futuristic technologies allow for the first time to venture into the brains of people like Kim Peek and others. Savant-expert Darold Treffert puts it this way: 'As long as we don‘t understand the Savants, we don‘t understand ourselves.'

The Living Computers - Part 1 What if we can find a way to harness our memory power to its maximum capacity? What would life be like if we did not forget any longer?

The Miracle of Creativity - Part 2 Where does creativity come from? How can humans invent brand new things, languages or melodies? Can it be learnt? It would seem so, otherwise, how can Savants perform things they have never learnt?
