Cheryl Strayed este în pragul divorțului și, după moartea mamei ei, simte că nu mai există speranță. Filmul explorează pericolele întâmpinate, dar și satisfacția încercată de tânăra femeie în timpul acestei călătorii care mai întâi o îngrozește, apoi o face mai puternică și, la sfârșit, o vindecă.
