The Bridge of San Luis Rey spune povestea unui preot care caută să descopere dacă întâmplarea tragică a avut vreun motiv divin.

Acțiunea se petrece în Lima, Peru, în secolul al XVIII-lea iar scenariul se bazează pe romanul scris de Thornton Wilder, după care s-a mai făcut o ecranizare în 1929.

Filmul este povestea unor destine care se desfășoară într-un spațiu ce pornește de la teatrele și străduțele înguste ale Limei din secolul al XVIII-lea până la maiestuoasa curte a Spaniei, prin palatele arhiepiscopilor peruvieni și misiunile Inchiziției din Madrid, din sanctuarele altarelor incașe aflate pe cele mai înalte culmi ale Anzilor, până la țărmurile americane ale oceanului Atlantic.
