În Dark Phoenix, X-Men se confruntă cu cel mai formidabil și puternic dușman: chiar unul de-al lor, Jean Grey. În timpul unei misiuni de salvare în spațiu, Jean este aproape ucisă când este lovită de o forță cosmică misterioasă.
