Inspirat din bestseller-ul lui Dee Brown, Masacrul de la Wounded Knee, începe cu momentele de triumf a celor din tribul Sioux, asupra Generalului Custer de la Little Big Horn.
Acțiunea este centrată pe lupta celor trei personaje principale: Charles Eastman (Adam Beach, “Flags of Our Fathers”), un tânăr doctor cu studii la Dartmouth, care aparține tribului Sioux; Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg, “The new world”), mândrul șef din Lakota, care refuză să se supună politicii guvernului American și senatorul Henry Dawes (Aidan Quinn, “Empire Falls”), unul dintre cei responsabili de politica dusă de guvern în ceea ce privește situația indienilor.
În timp ce Eastman și profesoara Elaine Goodale (Anna Paquin) fac eforturi ca cei din rezervație să aibă o viață mai bună, senatorul Dawes încearcă să îl convingă pe președintele Grand să adopte o atitudine mai blândă față de acei oameni.
Epic la bază, Masacrul de la Wounded Knee este un classic western plin de emoție.
